Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done or seen happen while on a bike?

I once reached down to brush off my rear tire after riding through some crap on the road. My hand got a little too much grip on the tire and it ended up wedged between the tire and the seat tube as I skidded down the road at 40kph.

The people I was riding with were very, very amused.

I didn't crash so it was kinda funny.

Watching the newbies flop over on their side while first clipping in or coming to a stop is always entertaining. We've all done it a time or two.

Tried to adjust an old-school, fork-mount spedo-sensor at the beginning of a race. I pushed it too far, it went into the spokes, broke off, broke the spoke, and I had to release the QR on the caliper to ride without any brake rub. Rode 80 more miles like that.

The dumbest thing I've done is to think it would be cool to hit a water puddle at the bottom of a hill on my MTB going over 30mph. Since the puddle turned out to be deep enough to swallow my bike and launch me over the bars like a rocket I get to live with metal in my left shoulder that now sits an inch below my right one.

Once I got a slow leak puncture in my front tire. My spares had dry rotted or something since I had not used them in so long. The punctured tire was the best option, so I pumped it back up and tried to nurse it home. A couple of miles from my destination I wasn't paying attention to how much air had leaked out and took a corner too fast. The tire folded up and I went sliding off the bike right in front of a whole bunch of passing cars. It was embarrassing and several jerks yelled from cars about my skills. One nice lady asked if I was okay.

Tried to adjust the computer sensor on my fork and plowed into a traffic island at 20 mph. Snapped the headtube clean off and broke the bike in two.

There's a drainage grate at the bottom of my driveway. The angled grates are just wide enough to fit a 23-25mm road bike tire. One morning I was going out for a ride, clipped in as I coasted down the driveway, pushed the button to start my computer, and was promptly sent over the handlebars as 1/3 of my front wheel dropped into the drain. Only did that once in the 12 years I've lived there and likely won't let it happen again. First time I've admitted this in public.

there are so many to choose from

One time I tried to do a wheelie on my road bike. I was slowing going up a hill, and just to break the boredom of grinding up the hill I tried a wheelie, jerked up on the handlebars and the next thing I knew I'm on my back and bike is on top of me, back got scraped pretty bad - bike was ok.

Another time, I went around the barricades on new road they had paved. I looked nice and smooth, anyway, I'm riding along at a fair clip, sort of to one side, and that yellow plastic tape they mark off the barricades with had come loose and was blowing in the crosswind. Tape got caught on my handlebar, and pulled me over, well the tape had just enough strength to it to basically jerk the handlebars sideways, launched me pretty quick and I skidded along - messed up my arm and wrist - bike was ok.

first time getting a front flat.. halfway through a rainy century. I coasted down to a few mph then decided to pull into a guy's yard. soft tire/rim into grass = endo. luckily I made it to the grass and it was a soft wet landing but my friend behind me was like WTF was that? haha

Anyone tried to tap in an end cap while riding? won't do that again.. came really close to eating it but save it at the last second.

another close call. I was waiting for my gf on a hill so i put it in small ring to do a U-turn. Mid way through the turn my chain dropped and i must have hit 180rpm. Clipped out and stepped down just in time haha.

I did that.

Front tire skidded along the lip until the bars twisted out of my hand and I went over like superman. The only thing I remember is laying in the middle of the road thinking, "I hope I didn't scratch my helmet." Woke up with to the sight of two paramedics kneeling next to me and a state trooper looking down at me.

I thought it would be a good idea to go ride a 13% grade gravel road with my 46/16 single speed.

A little.

I should have added that the bike and I were both fine, other than a little scuff on my bar tape. I dusted myself off and went on my ride.

Whacking a loose bar end plug while riding.

Don't do it.
