Anquetil
Does anyone here pedal in the style of jaques anquetil ? Basically it is (as I understand it) a toes down, heel up style which lets you apply power more smoothly. Other benefits include removing tension in the lower back and allowing even weight support with your upper body. I tried it for about 20 miles on a fixed gear a few days back, seems nice, but I havent exactly got it down. I suffered a terrible cramp of my entire left calve sprinting away from a car too.

Do you mean ankling?
I try it sometimes. Right now I'm trying to get my calves strong enough to handle doing it often, and I'm trying to drill it into my muscle memory.

I don't try to but it's just how I pedal, I've tried other styles but always slip back into the way I've done it all my life.

1955 - whats the magic ? Ive figured out its better to feel the muscles in the shin stretching rather than tense your calve, but I havent really gotten the essence of it yet. There must be something that will make it really light and easy.

Try that on a bigger gear like 53 x 15 or 14. Your foot will eventually flattened.

Anquetil also had a method of resting a leg after so many pedal strokes. I don't know the details off the top of my head.
