Your Christmas Weekend Ride Reports - Dec 24 - 28

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

34 miles and 1900' on the tandem Saturday. It was a bit chilly, 34°-39°, but dry and little wind. We had fun. It was supposed to be a group ride, but we were the only ones who showed up. Just as well. I had on my Lakes for the first time this year. They have a thicker sole than my Sidis, so it felt like I had my knees up near my chin and my legs hurt. After stopping several times for saddle adjustments, I wound up with my saddle being 5mm higher. We also had to stop a couple times for clothing adjustments because I was overheating. Anyway, a lovely ride, really fun, and 3 Strava PRs plus 2nds on almost every other segment. As we crested yet another hill about 5 miles from the end, I realized that I had had enough fun. I was done with fun. We cruised back to our truck. Still got another 2nd on the last hill.

Today, Sunday, it's the same temperature as Saturday except pouring down rain. Nice to see we made a wise choice in riding days. We plan to snowshoe tomorrow and I hope to get in a day's alpine skiing this coming week, maybe night skiing to avoid the crowds.

I got in 37.2 miles w/1887' yesterday and 29.9 miles w/1,567' today. Enjoyable weather but today it was windy. Yesterday was my first time riding with others on the road but with guys who are much faster than me, plus I wasn't feeling great. I tried to keep up the best I could for as long as I could but I was exhausted 18-20 miles in. I tried to get them to go on and let me make my way back but the took it easy and showed down enough for me to stay in sight of them. I wasn't recovered today but it was too nice out to not get out. I started out strong but a long upward grade into heavy head wind zapped my energy and the rest of the ride was slow but steady.

I stopped and snapped a picture crossing one of the bridges, I do live in a pretty area.

Even though my times this weekend were disappointing, I am getting better, stronger and faster. My shifting is smoother and I'm almost always making shifts at the right time to maintain my 75-85 cadence and I have a lot more confidence taking turns at speed, I even find myself pedaling through rather than not. My disappointing numbers are better than my best efforts 3 months ago.

36 miles today.

Flatted a tubular, thankfully it was near the end of it's lifespan anyway. Swapping tubulars is so easy on the road.

Sorry for the rant. lol. Other than that, it was a nice workout/ride.
that pisses me off in group rides too. Bad etiquette and experienced riders should know better.
Next time lead them through a minefield of potholes and don't say anything. See how they enjoy it.

Just kidding but yeah, that's turning into an expensive day when people aren't communicating.

Christmas day the daughter and I rode a couple of miles with her on her new purple mountain bike, then I grabbed 40 more miles in gorgeous weather in the 70s. Got in a short recovery ride Saturday before the torrential downpours hit then here came the ice storms on Sunday.

Someone decorated a few of the trees on the local bike trail.

85 miles on Christmas day, took a total of 6 hours 49 minutes with breaks thanks to only getting 8 miles of tailwinds in the beginning and another 8 miles at the end.

Finally felt well enough for a ride last night. I took my usual jaunt around Davis Is. Oddly my bike got verbally sexually harassed by some young lady who yelled out the window of her car "I want to shove your bike up my *******". I'm not making this up. This had to be the weirdest thing anyone has said to me while cycling. I guess the darkness emboldens people. Also on the way home I ride on the Riverwalk for a few blocks. Very crowded last night with totally oblivious people. I stopped a few times just because of walkers looking down at their smartphones were heading straight at me. They only looked up at the last second and walked around. The look on their faces was great. How they missed my headlight I don't know.

I'm a day late... yesterday I did 24 miles biking to the local single-track park (Theo Park in Mpls). Great ride, getting into shape for the Frozen Forty in a few weeks.

The city deer in Theo are not afraid of fatbikes, not one little bit. I biked within 15 feet of these two and they didn't even blink.

The fresh snow was great for snow angels at the single-track course, I made a few (lost count), and saw some others that looks 'fun'. I'm converting to clipless on the fatbike and need to get up the learning-curve; it's not so easy to put a foot down as it was with platform.

Mashed potatoes on the roads coming home left the frame a mess:

Ironically, our temperatures over Christmas weekend were almost as warm in North Carolina as yours were in Australia. We have set record temperatures almost every day over the past week, with highs ranging from the mid to upper 70s F -- about 20 degrees higher than normal. It has been even warmer than usual at night, with low temperatures about 30 degrees above normal.

You might think that all the warm weather would be perfect for cycling but it has been accompanied with much rain and fog. However, I still managed to ride Friday, Saturday and Sunday over the Christmas weekend, logging 26, 44 and 52 miles on the successive days. Roads were wet much of the time, so I took my touring bikes with fenders, but I somehow avoided getting rained on. All of my rides were mostly on local greenways or the roads leading to them, so I avoided most of the traffic. My friends and I also rode a Christmas-light tour a few nights before the holiday. That was a lot of fun and something we try to do every year, ending up at a local restaurant or pub after the ride.
