Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it me or am I just anal

I was cleaning my giant defy 3 ,this am before my ride ,I know my bikes not the best .to what all the professional riders ride ,but I spent almost a grand on a new wheelset, dt swiss 350 disk ready hubs ,silver plated brass nipples ,spokes, H.E.D. Belgium rims n continental tires
But any way I caught myself polishing my nipples while cleaning my bike n rims, is it just me or does any body else wanna protect their investment. **********?

As a maintenance man by trade, I find more p.m's. done on my equipment less break downs , just wanted to know if anybody else wipes down their bikes ,I even caught myself cleaning my spokes ,n they were dirty too ,guess its just me .lol..

I keep mine pretty clean and detailed...maybe not to the point of polishing nipples, but they get wiped down and spray waxed like just about everthing else, after nearly every ride. One of my ridemates commented on the sheen today, as we set out for a dirt ride.

I'm purposely skipping the line about Pics or it didn't happen.

Not as bad as you are, the entire wheel gets thoroughly cleaned when I do my regular overall cleaning, weekly. Everything gets looked over before I ride, daily, for safety. If you enjoy your bike, and it makes you happy, have at! Its your ride, you paid for it and none of us should stop you, but I'll wager someone will try. Ignore them, please.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

I have almost the opposite approach, and do not ever obsess over my bikes. IMO the bike is there to serve my needs, not the other way around. I do very little, but effective maintenance, and my bikes neither break down, nor wear out prematurely.

The keys are decent lubrication with lubes that last and keep water out, and attention to any early warning sign of a developing issue (ie. noisy BB).

I also am rather lax about cleaning my bikes. I do try to keep my wheel rims and brake pads clean and grippy, but it doesn't bother me if I have streaks of brake juice running down the fork legs and stays. And like FBinNY, I try to keep on top of anything that feels funny.

I'm anal about squeaks and creaks. The drivetrain and pedal cleats (speedplay) get regular attention. The rest of the bike gets the occasional windex wipe down, but there is no schedule.

I am really anal about cleaning but I was also the kid that grew up with all my toys etc. In perfect condition. I was big in to show cars and it all kind of rolls over to whatever my interest is. I like nice things and keeping them that way is part of the fun. I do like riding more but maintenance and cleanliness is high priority not considering money invested.

If it means ten minutes more riding or maintenance, I do the riding. Like the old saying "it's a tool, not a jewel." I do the necessary stuff like lube and mechnical work but often wash it when I do my cars.

It is a hobby and part of the hobby is enjoying the cool stuff. I have a stem I bought for my son's bike (but really for me). It was replaced in a fitting with a shorter stem. I keep it here on my desk to touch and show others.

PM was a BIG deal when I was in the Army. Then at one point in my career I had a small factory full of machines to keep maintained and running. So... that's my excuse for being an anal-retentive nipple polisher. But just so you'll know..... you are not alone.

I have 5 bikes and each and everyone of them are clean to spotlessly clean and ready to ride. I not only perform the maintenance of the bicycles... I enjoy doing it. I even buy "project bikes" just to have something to work on in the winter months. It could be worse... I could have a dirty bicycle.

I took a shower with my cross bike today...

most at of the time I don't really do much with the bike other than maintenance to prevent rust on steel frames or expensive replacements. I ride a lot, so keeping everything spotless would eat pretty heavily into my ride time.

BTW... my MTB is filthy. If it were clean, everyone would think i don't ride it.

Road bikes should be clean. I've seen some jockey wheels with crud so thick that needs to be scraped off with a screwdriver tip.

Lol I even asked the lbs guy I bought my wheels at , after I found out they were sealed (bearings) I was ok . I'm so used to getting up on shift at 4am , heck on my days off I'll p.m. the bike. Early am . But as I'm riding by myself ,and I don't wanna breakdown on the rd , usually I just go over it mechanically, but I just wanna keep it clean so I won't crap out another 2200.00 any time soon . Lube it n look over the rest n ride ,,,,,,

I don't know what sort of PM can come from actually polishing them. An occasional inspection is helpful, but over-cleaning a bike is, IMO, a waste of time. Having watched enough mechanics wash a bike more like a horse than fine china, I figure that's the standard.

But if it helps you feel connected to your bike, go for it.

Personally I prefer to finish cleaning my bikes and then wash up before I even think about polishing my nipples.
