Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

All that being said, if it has usable tires/tubes and is functional, I don't think $250-$300 between friends would be too bad of a deal.

Frankly, I think the blue book is a bit low on this one. $150 in like-new condition for a bike with drop bars and working 9-speed shifters (with hoods that go for ~$30+ in ebay auctions) is probably an underestimation.

That 'book' does seem really low on this one. 2x what's listed there. 3x in many markets in the summer (like here in Portland).

Not much of a friend if you ask me.

He's asking more than the thing sold for when new back in 2005.

Seems like $200-$300 depending on the condition of the brifters would be a fair price.

Check the headtube for cracks radiating from the welds. I've seen of couple of Felts with cracked headtubes in the past six months.

^ true. But it's also not friendly to offer $250 if the person is asking $900. Might be better to say no thanks and check out other options.

Best thing to do if you really want the bike might be to print the Bicycle Blue Book page, and show him how generous you are being to offer so much more than it is "worth."

If you have $900 to spend, you can get a new bike with a warranty. I think it's way over priced.

In fairness, the blue book does seem low on this bike. However, if you read the blue book the bike came with Tiagra and this bike has a mix of 105/Ultegra. Also, I am assuming that the Velocity rims are not standard on the bike. With that being said, $900 is extremely high. He may not know the real value or he is over valuing his product most likely based on his upgrading it over time. Either way, it is not a good deal for you. I would politely decline it and start looking elsewhere. No need to offend him. Chances are over time he will realize that nobody sane will pay that amount for the bike. Check out other options as you can buy a new Felt in that same price range. It may come with Tiagra and different wheels but that is not a big deal. You could get a new Fuji from Performance, which is comparably equipped for less than that.
Also, before pursuing it further with your friend make sure that the bike actually fits you.

I think it's best to say, "I kinda want to shop around a little bit." I just don't think there is a polite way to say that the asking price is nuts and offering a third of it is actually generous. I'd say it's a no win situation with the friend; so I'd walk away from that option.

or go spend $500 on a new Giant Defy 5 with a warranty and invite your friend to take his felt out to ride with you.
