Overdressed/undressed: help revising winter kit

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Get a long sleeve Merino jersey - good for wide range of temperatures, extremely versatile layer it up, layer down. Wicks and doesn't hold in body odors like synthetics.
I own these:

Voler: Black Label Wool Jersey

Edit - read through thread. Yeah I have that LG Enerblock jacket too, but generally if it's cold enough to wear (Sub 30s), I'm indoors on the trainer.

Do you wear some kind of athletic underwear under the bibs? Are thermal leg warmers as warm as tights, in general?
Just toss a handwarmer in your bibs....

Warm tights are warmer than leg warmers IMO. I've ridden in single digits quite comfortably in tights. Wouldn't want to do that with regular shorts and warmers.

I can ride with bibs and knee warmers down to almost 40F if it's not too windy. So, I'm certain that a decent-weight leg warmer would provide the warmth I need on the legs down into the lower 30s. The "vital bits" are my only concern. Personally, I hate tights, as they effect my positioning, agility, and pedaling form on the bike.

Sounds like the tights you've worn were just too stiff or tight for your comfort - maybe water resistant or windstopper type? The most weatherproof I've worn have some odd seams and feel like jeans sometimes, but I've a set that are ordinary thermal, which are as easily stretchy as anything, and sometimes feel like I've nothing on (except I'm not cold).

If you want to ride with leg warmers in the winter, find some heavyweight bib shorts. Castelli makes a pair out of it's Nanoflex material that is the same thickness as it's tights.

Yeah thermal bib shorts are the key to making leg warmers or knee warmers work when its very cold.

Second or maybe third the Ibex 150s.

I need more insulation on my chest than my legs when I ride. Too much on my legs and there's no way to avoid overheating.

Are there any good, not too pricey, somewhat fitted wind jackets that are recommended? They don't need to be waterproof, and I'd actually prefer they weren't. I've seen the Pearl Izumi Aero Jacket, which is a purely wind-resistant soft-shell that's stretchy enough to fit over other garments. Any others?

In terms of layering, is stacking a pair of base layers or a base layer and a wool shirt under a windbreaker a good way to go for those 30-40 degree days? I know a more common approach (and mentioned in this thread) is stacking a thermal LS jersey over a base layer, but with how my body handles temperature, I think a LS jersey would get minimal use in my arsenal.

They're Gore Windstoppers. Kinda' feel like rubber tubes on the legs. Should've bought plain thermals, but live and learn.
