Mundane question of the week: Helmet strap management

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mundane question of the week: Helmet strap management

I've only been riding forever, yet this one thing continues to make me crazy. Helmet straps.

I'm hoping no question is too mundane for the 41, so here goes:

Helmet straps: Mine are always getting loose. I tighten, they loosen. Is it just me?

Bonus question: Do you trim your shorter so they don't flop in the wind, or do you just keep moving that little rubber loop/holder around?

Again, a job for a small 1/2 inch strip of color coordinated Duct Tape keeps loose ends from flapping and keeps straps from loosening. Remember, all a shop needs is Duct Tape, WD40 and a multitool.

If no adjustment is needed,

a few stitches by hand or machine will take care of the issues,

& not be a problem when you wear the helmet in the shower.

I use grip tape, like used on a hockey stick, to get the excess strap out of the way. I use the tape also to wrap the CO2 so my hand doesn't freeze when discharging.

I re-tighten my helmet straps about once a month.
I think one of my kids must be screwing with me.

I solved both problems by tying a knot in my excess strap.

Yes, and a quick burn with a match to melt and seal the strap end to stop potential fraying.

I trim the excess and use superglue at the end cuts. Works like a charm.

My straps loosen as well, and I tighten them as needed. I also cut the excess.

I trim the excess so its not flopping around. If the excess is placed in the loop the straps don't slip much at all. Maybe adjust every few weeks, but not a big deal. And when I get a haircut, need to adjust again.
