Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Position of the lever makes the gear obvious when I drive standard. I wouldn't mind having an indicator for reverse though.

Or going downhill (on my bike) I don't always know when I'm at the end of my cassette. Nor uphill. RPE works in general for gear selection ... until I'm unconsciously slacking and need to HTFU, which I only know by looking at the speedometer, which effectively substitutes for a gear indicator ...

Might be needed for a early Porsche 911 with a "dog leg" 1st gear.

My Jetta, R is same position as 1st. The first time I got in it I started off in 3rd. So every month or two I'll get in, rock forward (someone stopped in 1st for some reason) and oops gotta shift into reverse.

Why, were you hoping for an uglier loss deeper in to the playoffs?

The Jetta is like this but when you go to actually shift, R and 1 are the same position. Since I thought it WAS like the diagram, I shifted one over from Reverse, hence 3rd.

So it could be a defect in OP's shifters after all?

It would be a shame to lock down the thread before OP's problem is fully resolved.

First post after the OP..

Those were actually manufactured until 2004 in Mexico.

Correct, but they stopped making them in Germany in January of 1980.

The Mexican cars still had swingaxle rear suspension while the German cars and IRS.
