Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

has having a mirror, and watching it, saved your butt?

Today was my first experience with having a blind old bat with a scooter on the back of her beat Lincoln Conti.

Noticed she was crowding the white line and motioned for her to move left, but no way. She had her tires over the white line when she came past me. Lucky for me there was a turn lane that I could escape into...

Have a mirror and watch out for yourself!

I had a mirror. I watched it a lot. I still got hit by a pickup. i was inches from the shoulder, and it appeared in the mirror that I was going to be fine.

Invest in a helmet and a good cell phone service. Wear a RoadID, and let someone know where you are and when you'll be back.

Mirrors are a good helpful item to use.

Glance in it every 5-6 seconds.

How can you use a Cell Phone when you are knocked out?

The same way you use a mirror when you're knocked out

Mirrors are fine and good, and I believe using one had helped me as many times as listening, looking over my shoulder, and choosing routes where traffic wasn't as great of a hazard. When I did get hit, it happened near a house, and that persons called 911. I was not knocked out, and used my phone to tell my wife what happened. Also, my wife can follow my location on my phone (some Garmin devices will connect with a phone and allow this too), which doesn't require my consciousness.

Use a bright-as-hell rear light, keep some sort of ID on your person, and let people know where you are, and where you should be. Mirrors also help, but make sure you're not avoiding the dangers in front of you by obsessing over the dangers behind you.

I have a Zefal Spy. I go through a phase when I'll use it for a few weeks, then I won't use it for 6 months. Can't say it's ever prevented or caused an accident. But there's little to no traffic where I ride.

Neck still works just fine, so no need for me to resort to using a mirror.

when you drive in a city with big oshkosh trucks and volvo coach buses travelling faster than you... and passing one foot away from you and squeezing you onto the sidewalk/pavement curb, if you dont have a mirror, you will have a very 'stiff' neck

Our roads and your "roads" are not remotely the same thing. I live in 'Murica, after all. Even the sketchier, no-shoulder areas are still on +10' wide lanes.

One of my buddies has this system and it's pretty awesome. Not cheap, but it works well.

Never do I leave on my bike without my helmet mirror, use it all the time, the older I get the less the neck likes to turn. I cannot for the life of me see why someone would not want to see what is behind you without turning your head.
