Cannondale CAAD 8 or 12 for a beginner?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale CAAD 8 or 12 for a beginner?

My buddy is ready to upgrade from a Trek hybrid to a real road bike. He's been looking at the 2016 Cannonade CAAD 8 and 12 models that are well under $2K and come with Shimano 105's. What do you guys think?

Have him ride both and get the one that speaks to him.

Depends... They both have aggressive race geometry, designed for crit racing, he's got to want a pure race bike to like either. Caad 8 has a lot of value but caad 12 weighs less and is far more high tech and comparable to most other racing bikes you'd encounter in a race.

We just got the Caad12 in my shop and it is a sweet bike. Very light and compliant. The best thing you can do is go to a store and try some bikes out. Ask if you can ride a bike for a few miles.

Being his first road bike, I'd push him to a more enduro style bike. The synapse is a great bike if you want a cannondale. I rode a Felt Z100 for 6 months as a demo and it is by far one of the most comfortable bikes I have ever ridden. In my opinion, one of the best bang for your buck on the market. You can get a Felt Z5, a full carbon bike with 105, for just under 2k if you wanted to get a nice bike for the money.

Also check out last years models. I know we're selling off the last of our Caad10 105s for $1100 right now. (Other than weight, I could hardly tell a difference between the 10 and 12.)

I agree with everything you wrote. Unfortunately the guy is head strong and refuses to look at anything else. Personally I recommended an endurance bike with 105, carbon frame, and disk brakes. Oh well.

CAAD 12 if he already likes riding a bike, that way he won't think that he should have went with the higher model after the fact.
