Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

And if you have a tuxedo, you'll wear it more.

A Tuxedo should be part of every man's wardrobe.
The only times I ever needed a Tux was to stand up in someone's wedding, or in my own...and every time the groomsmen had to wear different styles. One tux would never work for that.

Well, 3/4 of the weddings I've attended, including the only one at which I wore my tux, have been after 5.
I've worn a gray striped cutaway, too, when the occasion called for it, but I sure as heck don't own one.

A meaningless statistic. At every American wedding I've been to (except for my own), the groom at least wore a tux despite the time of day. Many of these weddings were in the early afternoon.

Tuxedos don't have that evening wear designation to most Americans.

I don't choose what I wear based on rules around color and some manufactured holiday borderline, either.

I understand that, hence why American's wedding photos look like the bride is posing with a waiter.

I wore my tuxedo twice last year. Once as the father of the bride at my youngest daughter's wedding. It was appropriate to do so. The other time was as a wedding guest at a very chi chi event held at Congressional (Golf Course). Most men there wore tuxes.

My wife also likes ballroom dancing, and there are certain events where a Tuxedo is de rigueur.

Having one bike is a silly idea, BTW.

I once met an older fellow who played golf with only 3 clubs: 5 wood, pitching wedge, and putter. He had touch, though...

I hope he had distance on his wedge, too.

Tailcoats and cravats at my wedding. In the US.

I disagree with the n+0 sentiment of the OP article, but I do agree with the principle that you shouldn't be afraid to take your road bike through some gravel every now and again.

Mine will likely be ostritch boots, starched jeans, a fringed sport coat and a bolo tie-- with my best hat naturally. (OK/TX thing)

That article is dumb. Everyone needs 4 road bikes. Climbing bike, aero bike, bad weather/road bike, titanium bike. Myself, I'm only halfway there.

Yeah, only an observation, and about as meaningless as the original question.
I'd also point out that most folks dress for the reception rather than the ceremony.
Would you prefer this, "despite the time of day?"

The odd thing isn't that so many Americans wear tuxedos to daytime weddings, its that so many make their weddings out to be occasions for formalwear in the first place, like their reception is some royal ball (in which case a rented costume may actually be more appropriate than something one would keep in ones own closet). You want to talk about a marketing conspiracy to rip off the consumer with extravagance and exaggeration....

FWIW, I'm all for "appropriate attire," but I don't think much of the population has any more cause to own a tuxedo than they do to own a full-bouncer mountain bike.

When my family were flying over from Ireland they did ask if they should be wearing that sort of thing...

Hmmm. Having one bike is totally fine. But to say that you only need one because the one you have would have been just fine for the ride you missed, well, that's being a dopus.

It's like saying you could have put salt in your soup, but didn't, because you chose not to, and now that you're done, you wished you would have salted your soup. Therefore, the only spice you need... is salt!

All I see is a list of bikes and something about chain lube ... which ought to get several pages of comments if the BF crew ever finds it.
