Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can only ride one bike at a time, and the trails I'm legally allowed to ride are far enough away that it makes more sense to rent a MTB occasionally than to own one.

That gave me no reasons at all to only own one bike. Just explanations of why someone with only one bike thinks that is enough for them.

Apparently renewing my USAC license gets me a subscription to this magazine. I saw that article and immediately got annoyed with how utterly Portland that guy is.

Practicing barrier hurdling on an Oregon beach in the rain with a carefully groomed beard, rapha gear, and no helmet? Ok, cool.

Seattle. Not Portland. They're actually in different states, like Texas and Mexico.

Lol, I assumed Portland without reading his actual location. "How utterly PNW that guy is", better?

You do only "need" one bike. You also only "need" one pair of underwear. Viva la difference.

In the last year there were several times where one of my bikes was in some way broken or out of commission. Do I just not ride on those days then? A 2nd bike had me on the road all year. Also:

I once skipped a big fall road ride with friends because I didn’t think my ’cross bike was the right tool for the job.
Seriously? What a tool, more like.

I also hated the "bla bla I realized how sad I was when I saw all their sweet pix on social media".

Makes it sound like he's more upset that he didn't get some sick shots for Instagram likes than missing out on being on his bike with his buddies.

I guess we're all Haterz.

I guess I picked up on the cross part because I rode an entire season on a cross bike on the road, including a several centuries. You'd think a bike shop owner would be more aware.

But yes, feel free to hate him for being a hipster ****** too.

So I pass up on half my rides because my bike doesn't do fix gear? Mess with an eccentric hub? ANd have to mess with the rear brake every time I change cogs?

Even if my bike could do both, changing back and forth would be a pain in the ***. (I did spec my Peter Mooney horizontally dropped so I could but I have yet to make the switch.) And since I will always have a fix gear, I guess riding gears would take a distant back seat.

Ben

So should I get rid of my LHT and try to carry 40 lbs. of gear on my custom ti road frame that can only take a max of 25c tires and is not geared properly for fully-loaded touring in the mountains, or should I get rid of the road frame and try to do fast club rides on my heavy ass, slack geometry LHT? I will have to ponder this.

Just one for me. My excuses are kids in their odyssey years, my HOA only allowing 100 square feet of shed space, and light-colored adult carpet indoors where bikes should not go.

I am up to 4 pairs of wheels, and seem to have accumulated enough spares I'm only saddle, bars, and stems short of another bike.

You fix them unless you broke your frame or fork.

I do my own wrenching, but sometimes I just don't have the time in the day to do it, and I'd rather leave it for the weekend and ride.

Also sometimes I don't have the part I need to make the fix, and have to wait for it on order.

I'm not saying that it's a reason to own a 2nd bike, its just that I'm glad I do have a 2nd bike on those days.

I'm not driven by N+1, but then I'm not going to be trapped by N=1 either.

I have sold bikes that were redundant or didn't see much use and have been all the happier for it, but one bike? Hellz nah. I love my Crockett and right now it has fenders and 32mm tires and can go pretty much anywhere, but I freaking love riding my "superbike" on a nice day. I have done longer road rides on the Crockett, including a metric century pretty recently, but I would miss the Domane too much.

Plus, I still never finished my dropbar MTB. That it sitting in the bike room right now, feeling all sorts of neglected.
