Moving in a few months, buy bike from LBS in new city? Does it matter?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Moving in a few months, buy bike from LBS in new city? Does it matter?

I'll be moving from where I live in May and then moving to Detroit in August. It looks like Specialized is going to have a spring sale starting 3/1 and the bike I want will be heavily discounted. Given this I should be able to get the price at any dealer. I've never had a 'nice' new bike or a real LBS relationship to speak of. Does it really matter where you buy the bike from from a warranty perspective and anything else I may not be considering?

August, September, October that same bike will probably be on sale just to clear space for next year's bikes. Shops should be willing to make deals even if they aren't marked as such. You might try buying that or another bike after you move to Detroit. A good shop would love to ta good working relationship with someone starting their career.

I would buy from where you're going to be moving. It's good to be close in case any issues come up, or even if you just need your derailleur adjusted after a couple weeks. There are Specialized dealers all over. I visited a couple in Southeast Michigan and got good service at both, even though I was only just looking.

If you have a bike that you like/love to ride, then wait.

If you don't have a bike that you like/love to ride, then get one, now.

How many miles could you put on that new bike between now and then?

^This! If you have time to ride in the summer, and you don't have a good bike, get it and enjoy it!

If you're able to find a Specialized dealer in Detroit that you enjoy working with they should be able to handle any warranty issues if you buy now. I'd be more concerned about the availability of the bike that you're interested in and will it be available in August. There might even be an incentive to move the older stock and give a discount, but August might be too soon for that. As mentioned, it would also depend on what you have to ride now and can you wait that long. A new bike is hard to resist.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. I sold my Tricross sometime back so am without a road bike at the moment. Do have a nice Trek hybrid but it's not the same. The 2016 Diverge Expert I'm looking at is normally 3800 and during the March sale it's down to 3200. If pricing is anything like last year I don't expect to get that 15% off again till around October/November when it starts getting cold, at least 3500-4000 miles is out this year. Interestingly, except one store in Chicago no other LBS' I've seen in the midwest had the 2015 Diverge discounted at any point so I'm tempted to just pull the trigger since that discount doesn't seem to be a guarantee even after the model year switch.

I feel guilty because I won't graduate until August but I do have the money and have had my fulltime job lined up since September.

Buy it during the current sale. Any warranty issues can be dealt with through any authorized dealer after purchase. You do need to have your original receipt. Ride it as much as you can before you move and get the first free checkup performed at the shop where you bought it (assuming they offer a free checkup as part of the deal).

If you have the money and do not have a wife and kids to look out for, and if buying now will save you $600 AND make you happy, then getting the bike is a no-brainer. I'd feel guilty not getting it!

You have yet to graduate and you have a job already lined up. Enjoy it.
