Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thats a pretty open ended question. Performance, Nashbar and Bikesdirect all have some cheap bikes so if you just want the cheapest price then those are good options. Buying used will probably get the most bang for the buck

figure out what style of bike you want, than size, than bike brand/color/cost

If throwing darts,
CAAD10 w/ 105s 700-1000 used, 1200 new

Everything will cost near a G minimum buy in to play this game, so get the one you want. 2G will get you carbon from all major brands and styles with at least 105/rival level of gearing

get the windsor knight from bikesdirect. I bought it in college. Have had it for 4 years now. I've gone to carbon bikes, but I keep coming back to this one because it's cheap, so I'm not afraid to race it. The frame is super comfortable, especially for an aluminum frame; I don't doubt that the ride quality rivals that of a CAAD10. The weight is not very competitive, considering the whole bike built up weighs 20.3 lbs with decent wheels, which is maybe 2-3 lbs heavier than a CAAD or a mid range road bike, but that's quite trivial, even for racing cyclists. At cat 3, who anticipates upgrade to cat 2 next season if not this one, I don't expect this bike to hold me back. And with ultegra shifting, this is the absolute BEST value you will find ANYWHERE.... A full ultegra groupset (with crankset and BB, which this does not have) costs $6-700 on probikekit, and that's the BEST deal.... The disadvantage you will find with it is that it will only clear 25 tires with certainty. 28 is questionable, especially for the fork (they have upgraded the frame since 2012, so double check). Also, the stock rims and saddle are pretty meh, but this is true for pretty much all stock bikes. Expect to upgrade the wheels and saddle whenever you buy stock.

that's all I have to say,

Get a used high end bike. I used to be meticulous about paint finish and scratches. Now idgaf. You will get phantom knicks and scratches when you ride it. You get the most bang out of your buck with a used bike.

$2k should get you a previous year model that retailed for $4k. Go to all your local shops and see what they have. It will also buy a lot of bike in the used market.

Cheaper on their deal site (if you order it while it is active): GTS/Shimano Ultegra 11 Complete Road Bike - 2016 - Complete Bikes & Frames | Steep & Cheap

I was tempted to get that bike, but they do not have my size.

Yeah, I needed an XL, and fortunately they had one left in mid-Feb.

Thanks for the Steep & Cheap link!

That's the size I need as well. How do you like it? I might be able to squeeze into an L, but I think the geometry is not a relaxed as I would like.

franswa already linked to Steep and Cheap. Backcountry used to have another deal site for cyclists called Chain Love, but they closed it and put their bike deals on S&C. They also have whiskeymilitia.com You can order stuff and they will save it for a week so that you can combine shipping. Very dangerous! Good deals on those sites.

Love it. I'm 6'1" with a 34" inseam. It's fairly relaxed; much more relaxed anyway than a horizontal-top-tube frame (like my Steamroller). Very comfortable on long rides.

I've seen the 2015 Willier GTS go for $1599 - a great deal on a great bike. Just select the bike you like then do an exhaustive online search until you find the best price.
