Any Mass. Riders?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any Mass. Riders?

I might be doing some longer rides in Massachusets this summer and I was wondering about riding on the highways. Is it illegal? I know theirs nice shoulders on all the highways. If you don't ride on highways, where the hell would you ride? I actually want to do a loop too, doing the same 20 mile loop get's really booring. I'd rather just do one 60 mile loop once. Any help is appreciated.

I ride in Mass. You definitely don't need to ride on the highway. Pick up a bike map at any bike store and it will show you good routes.

Yes riding on highways is illegal as far as I know. Most of many highways have towns and quiet roads right along them, so you can do the same routes only with much more safety and legalness...

Having ridden about 15 miles of rt 95/128 I can't really reccomend it, besides being illegal on and off ramps are probably the scariest things I've ever ridden through in my life as they are lacking cross walks...

You should ride on Storrow Drive. Mellow drivers, huge shoulders, no potholes, it's a dream for a cyclist. HA just kidding.

dude definitely avoid the highways! go to crw.org and check out their cue sheets for good rides.

oh also there are NO shoulders on the highways in Massachusetts.

The cars legally drive in the shoulders here and it's terrifying. Honestly the highways = death.

I just moved here 6 minths ago and live in Templeton. So far the best roads I have been on have been 202 north in to New Hampshire. I've only been as far as Hillsborough but it's nice up to there for sure. Route 31 south of Route 2 is rather nice down to Holden. Route 32 is good from Athol to Ware but after Ware the shoulder disappears and traffic gets heavier. Route 62 is also nice between Princeton and Hubbardston. Route 119 is a nice ride and it's close to Lunenberg. I'm still exploring the are myself so those are the only roads I've been on so far. I will say don't ever take route 32 from the New Hampsire border to Athol unless you like potholes and VERY rough roads.

I believe several types of roads qualify as highways. I noticed people commonly call highways rte 95, 93, 495, 90 etc. but rte 1 and I believe 1A qualify as highways. 1 and 1A are opened to bicycles, I would not recommend rte 1 in Mass but I rode it North within NH through Porstmouth and it is fine.

1A is a nice scenic road with wide shoulders the whole way from Beverly to Porstmouth. I am actually thinking of doing Newburyport, MA to Portland,ME via 1A sometime soon. Haven't completly figured out the route yet.

If you are on the coastal southern Maine, 1 and 1A are good options for your loop.
