Shimano cleat compatibility with other pedals

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano cleat compatibility with other pedals

I'm guessing this is a no, but just wanted to confirm. I've got Shimano 105's a three bikes. If I go with a different set for one bike, say like these: Look KEO 2 MAX Road Pedals | Chain Reaction Cycles

I'm going to have to get new shoes, won't I?

New shoes or at least new cleats. SPD to road means changing from mountain shoes to road shoes.

Which cleats do you have now?

Shimano SPD or Shimano SPD-SL?

Two bolt SPD is pictured on the left. Three bolt SPD-SL is pictured on the right.

If you have two bolt SPD shoes then you need new three bolt shoes and Look cleats. If you have three bolt SPD-SL shoes then you can use the same three bolt shoes and just get new Look cleats.

Look pedals are not compatible with either SPD or SPD-SL.

I've got the SPD-SL cleats from Shimano for the 105 pedals. The cleats from other brands will not fit the 105 pedals. That's what I assume.

Yeah, new shoes with new cleats. Or change all the pedals. Sigh.

Edit: posted a bit late. You have it figured out

105's would be SPD-SL

You don't need new shoes, your shoes will be compatible with the LOOK cleats however, if you don't have another pair of shoes, you would have to change cleats every time you change bikes..........or..........buy another pair of shoes exclusively to use with the LOOK cleats and pedals.

Yeah, I know that my current shoes will fit the Look cleats, but it's the cleat-pedal interface that I wondered about. Obviously not practical to change cleats every time I change bikes. Also makes no sense to me to buy another pair of shoes. So struck with Shimano.

The look cleats are similar but they will not interchange with Shimano or vice versa.

i have look pedals, and i know an old friend that uses spd-sl cleats and he was able to clip in and take my bike for a spin around the parking lot last time i saw him. i don't know how easy or difficult they were to get in or out of, or how solid they felt when he was pedaling, or how much float the look pedal had with the spd-sl cleat, but i do know he was able to clip in and out and ride the bike...
