More a fashion victim than poseur. You're also caught up in comparing yourself to others (part of the marketing plan). A poseur would tell us how awesome he rides and then never ride anywhere.

For some insane reason, I want to get a picture now of myself riding hands free while strumming my EJ.

I'm a poser too. Even if I had a Walmart bike, I'd still be a poser.
I'm not only a poser, I'm a Fred too. A Fred poser. That's bad.

Love the username. I've been a Strat player since way, way back. Currently learning the intricacies of a Suhr Classic...
Poser? I doubt it. I'm 43 and getting back on the bike this spring. I'm also considering my first high end bike (Ti for that matter), and it may in fact be a custom geometry. I'm slow, although I'm getting stronger. I feel guilty, but at the same time I work a ton of hours. I have sacrificed most of my vacations in the past 5 years due to work issues, but that has paid off through opportunity. I'm now in a position where my hobbies (guitars, bikes, and competitive shooting) have become quite a bit more affordable. If I get a high end bike, its not going to make me feel bad. I work a lot of hours, stress about work when I'm at home, and I have found that when I'm on the bike I can't think at all about work. I can't put a dollar amount on what that's worth.
The other thing I'll leave you with is from a conversation I had with a leadership coach. I was commenting on how with my hobbies I strive for competence, but mastery would require me to sacrifice my other pursuits. The coach said that my definition of competence was what the general population would consider mastery. I didn't get it, and he brought up bikes. He said "You've told me that your normal rides are 40 - 50 miles, and you have ridden 100 miles in one day. Have you ever considered what percentage of people who own bikes will ever ride 10 miles, much less 100?"
Sir, in your matching kits, on your midrange bicycles, you are still an elite in the eyes of most bicycle riders. Take pride in that.

53 years old here too and look like an athlete. 6 pack abs and still somewhat ripped. But I am slow and I don't care. My joints are in horrible shape and to a large degree that prevents me from being in the shape I look like I am in. I'd happily give up appearances to gain good joints. I have some nice bikes. I don't care much at all about kit. I don't own a cycling jersey. Just do whatever makes you happy!

The other day, while hitting golf balls (yet thinking about cycling) I came to a conclusion:
At the moment, I am a poser.
I enjoy the kits. I enjoy the variety of bikes, the specs, the colors, the brands.
Yes, I enjoy riding. I enjoy climbing. I enjoy descending.
But alas, I'm not a very strong cyclist.
I'm 53 years old - I'm in pretty good shape - I've been athletic all my life. But I'm not sure I've ever been in really "good" shape.
It takes some grit and determination to be a strong cyclist. I feel I'm up to the task. But for the moment, I have to put my situation in perspective. I've only started this journey about a year ago. I've been on a few group rides, and many of the other (and older) cyclists are much stronger.
I have aspirations. I also view myself in a certain way: a "youthful, athletic 53 year old guy (that in his head thinks he's still in his 30's).
I have 2 somewhat expensive bikes - well, the lower tier of "good", yet dream of getting a 3rd more expensive bike (carbon with nice specs). I still want more clothing/gear.
I guess what I'm saying is that, at the moment, I'm "looking" better than I actually am.
Oh, the horror!!!

Bicycling is obviously not a competitive sport for you. It's a fashion endeavor and I salute you

Posers are people too. Just make sure you are wearing a jersey with sleeves. Tri posers are the worst.
