Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1) From your description, the other rider was unsafe and possibly rude.
2) Rather than glare, it might have been more productive to say "Hey man, next time just let me know if you want to pass."
3) To help with letting it go, I recommend the Discourses of Epictetus.

Most cyclists who pass you won't announce themselves first. It can be helpful and polite to, but most won't. Also, after you pass some people, they're going to want to race you. Etiquette and politeness don't really factor into it, it's just stuff you'll have to get used to. Try not to let it ruin your day.

I love these threads. You should have waved... Don't say "on your left" unless you do. Then it's rude, or it's not.

I don't usually announce a pass because I only pass when I can give another rider plenty of space (more than three feet). Too many people will look and/or drift towards you when you announce "on your left".

I never draft another rider that I don't know. Too dangerous. I also prefer strangers not to draft be as I do not want any responsibility for pointing out road debris or letting them know I'm slowing or sitting up.

You should know by now that sometimes people are going to act differently than you want or expect them to. There really isn't anything you can do about it. Just let it go and go on with your ride.

True. Last time I was going 29 MPH without a tailwind was when I was in my 20's.

I don't usually announce when coming up or passing, mainly because the other rider can't hear unless I shout. And when someone shouts it's not always understandable and puts people, or other cyclist into a panic as to go left or right.

Well, this was a race....

if you had kept up the 29 mph, there would have been no issue.

^ This. I was educated on passing another guy without announcing "on your left" one time. Him using rule #2 above helped me and now I do it all the time (especially on the bridge since the sidewalk is narrower). But its up to him to follow it afterward. But you did your education for the day. On a regular road, I'll only say something if I'm close to another rider or he/she looks a bit squirrly (cue images of folks on Citi bikes in Central Park ).

Call outs are expected when you know who you're riding with. However, the first time you call out "on your left" with a stranger, and they respond by suddenly swerving left, you may rethink your practice.

So you passed him while he was not moving, doing 29mph, but he managed to catch up to you. Must be one strong rider that fella.

The only time I say "on your left" is when I come up behind some dickweed swerving back and forth at 3mph with no regard for whomever.

I was not talking about you, you were caught by someone starting from a standstill. I suggest intervals.

Screw that. I don't owe anyone a callout, especially on a loud busy road. I wait until it's safe to pull further into the lane, and then I give the other guy plenty of room as I go around. Just hold your line, and you won't have a problem. The only time I ever call out is on the MUP, but in every other situation, I won't buzz you as I pass, but I don't owe you a callout.
