Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OK I Tried It!

Post the other day was asking about a "true century" - no stopping, no resting, etc. Well, I didn't do a full century but did a tough 65-70 mile loop. Lot's of climbing and some great descents. Wind was mostly a head wind - not sure how but this loop seems to be mostly into the wind.

Anyway, did not stop at all after the first couple of miles in town. Even after the big climb (1500 - 1600 altitude - 3.5 miles) I didn't stop before heading up the next two big hills. Normally we make a couple of stops to regroup at the top of the first climb and once more later in the route.

The verdict? Makes the ride tougher. Maybe because my speed was a little more, maybe the weather was warmer, but definitely felt this ride more than the last time I did it two weeks ago. Should be interesting next week!

Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. If you know the area the climb is from Vesuvius to the Blue Ridge Parkway on Hwy 56 and then home on the BRP. Group rides are usually about 4-5 people so drafting isn't a big factor for much of the ride - it's too hilly for effective draft.
