bike accident insurance?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes, you can buy insurance for your bike. I believe Markel offers it. I got a quote several years ago. It was just over $500 a year for coverage. That didn't seem worth it to me.

Also, I've heard from others that the companies that offer these policies are generally very knowledgeable about bikes, so if you get into a crash, don't expect a completely new bike. They will determine only what parts NEED to be replaced - scratches and cosmetic damage do not mean something needs to be replaced.

Yes, but it's very expensive since only people who crash regularly purchase it. It's more like trying to buy insurance for Corvette than a Corolla, you're going to pay a big risk premium.

We used https://www.bigringinsurance.com Pretty happy with them.
Made a claim and they paid the claim.

Pro Tip:
List every component specifically. Take pictures. Then insure your $10,000 machine for $4,000 total coverage. If stolen - you get $4,000. If crashed, you get each component replaced that is broken (no scratched, broken) up to $4,000.
For me it was wheels.

If you can afford a $3k+ bike, you are already effectively self insured

I looked into it but it wasn't worth it. I don't race however. If you crash it's unlikely that you'll completely destroy your bike. The frame can usually be purchased for 50% off using the crash replacement policy and same is true of my Zipp wheels. So let's say you have a $5k bike and crash it, it's entirely possible that you could repair it for less than $2000. At $350 a year (plus whatever deductible you choose) the math just didn't work out.

Also, if you crash into a car and they are at fault their insurance has to pay to repair your bike. Your bike insurance wouldn't even come into play.

Check with your homeowners or renters insurance to see what they cover

And your auto insurance if you have a car. Every car insurance policy I have ever had covered my bikes. as far as I know all states consider bicycles "vehicles". Of course the same deductible applies to the bike.

I have back up as my son was knocked off his $2500 Cannondale, the car then proceeded to drag the bike 3 blocks down the street before driving off. Filed police report and insurance wrote a check.
