Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ksyrium sl front hub play

I have an older (~2010) set of Ksyrium SLs. I noticed some lateral play in the front wheel that contributed to a slight rattle when going over bumps. I tightened the bearing preload adjustment with the special mavic tool such that the play was eliminated, but now there is drag, i.e. the wheel does not spin for more than 20 seconds. I can't seem to find that sweet spot in which there is zero drag and zero play.

Are my cartridge bearings shot? I cleaned them out and re-greased them, but I suspect this could be the problem. In the meantime, I'd rather have a little drag than lateral play, but will this drag actually affect my performance on the road?

back off your preload adjustment until there is no drag and the wheel is turning without resistance. if there is still play you should replace the bearings. Lp

Sounds like bearings are worn out.
If you have already adjusted to eliminate play and back off a wee bit, and the only way to reduce the play creates drag that means the bearings are off.

Yeah... as I suspected. I suppose it's not worth investing in a bearing press, so I'll buy the bearings and have the LBS handle. Thanks guys.
