Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend Ride Reports -- June 11/12/13

Happy Queen's Birthday long weekend! It's a long weekend down here in Australia. Whether you have a long weekend or not, tell us about your cycling and other sports. Are you meeting goals? Doing events? Heading out on long solo rides? Going swimming? Tell us all about what you're doing.

Friday -- wrote final exam ... and then went for a 2.3 km walk around town with Rowan to wind down.

Saturday -- rainy, windy and cold day. Snow down to 400 metres!

So we went to the gym and ran and walked and rowed. I did 25 minutes of running, 35 minutes of brisk walking, and just a few minutes of rowing.

Easy little race this morning. Didn't place, but managed 15th out of 40 after hanging out, relaxing in the back most of the time. Should have made some effort to move up sooner, but as it happened, I didn't bother (or put forth any effort to speak of, really) until the last mile.

Got home, put the bike back together and met a group to do Alpine hill x 3, hang out at the Market, and play around a bit on the way back.

Altogether about 60 miles of playing bikes on BEAUTIFUL late spring day.

Sunday -- another cool day, but warmer than yesterday. The high reached 12C with wind gusting to 50 km/h.

The first part of the ride was a bit of a slog into the wind, and that section had the most climbing. It was a workout. The way back also had a climb, but it wasn't too bad because we had a sort of cross-tail wind.

In total: 40.2 km

Group ride in sweet conditions.

Nominally 70, with some bonus miles for 85.

Unfortunately, the extra miles had many stops/intersections so the average speed went down.

These vanity issues can be vexing...

For us in the islands, Friday was King Kamehameha Day. His statue in town (across from the palace) gets draped in lei and Saturday was the flower parade:

I went out for my usual 45 miler on Sun. Some Sundays I can ride up the route in the Army's Schofield Barracks to the top of Kolekole pass (elev about 1600') but today was closed due to active firing on the Army's ranges there. The wind was such that a long downhill on the route had following winds, so I was blasting along at a pretty good rate. Will have to see after it gets on Strava how it stacks up. Of course, coming back home up what we call "pineapple hill" was somewhat into the wind but I tried the idea of "don't look ahead, just ride" and it actually worked pretty well.

Summer is here now in Austin. Each morning ride started with temps in the upper 70's and high humidity. Rode our usual club ride south on Saturday for 53 miles, then Sunday was a ride around the extended neighborhood for 47 miles. Was pretty dehydrated after both rides and spend the afternoons recovering.

Holiday Monday -- Queen's Birthday Long Weekend!

Today ... more sleep ... relaxing in new fuzzy pjs ... and crumpets for brekky.

Then we headed out for a 47 km bicycle ride. That was nice ... we kept up a pretty good pace. It was warmer than it has been the last couple days so that was good too. Lots of cyclists out and about.

Just before the end of the ride, we stopped for dinner at Fish Frenzy and had fish and chips.

Then it was home again ... housecleaning ... and relaxing.

No evening rides last week due to TS Colin and rain. It is supposed to be the start of the rainy season in FL, but usually it is a predictable pattern. Right now it is hitting about any time of the day. Also very hot and steamy out. Anyways I finally got in a ride on Saturday morning for 39 miles to Picnic and Davis Is. Sunday I went to Upper Tampa Bay trail for another 39 miles.

...sigh...I didn't get any riding in this weekend. Went out of town for a fun weekend, and when I got back we were up in the upper 90s (like I would have gotten on a bike late on a Sunday anyway!)

Tuesday -- 20 minutes on the trainer. I'm trying various changes to the setup to see if I can make it more comfortable for longer periods of time. Trying a saddle I never thought I'd use ... not sure about it yet.
