Duh: Use the small chainring! (and cassette changes)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No, but I don't see that jump as being significant enough to justify a second ring.

I love using triples because they allow me to use a 42 tooth middle ring, my all time favorite chainring. With cogs of 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21 and 23. I run 9-speed so I have 2 more cogs I can throw on. 12, 13, 18, 25 and 28 depending on the ride and my condition.

I spend very little time either double shifting or riding on the bigger jumps of the cogset and a lot of time riding good chainlines. (This was my old racing setup back when i didn't have any use for low gears. 53, 42 X 13, 14, 15, 17, 19. When I hung up my racing bike, I added a 28 tooth inner ring. As freewheel and cassette cogs got added, I kept the base gears and added the 12, 21, 23, 25 and 28. Then go thte filler cogs, 16 and 18 and now mix and match as I please. Life is good.

Ben

Well when your rings are that close together you need a lot of range in the cassette to make up for it.

I had a bike 40yrs ago with a 47/49 crankset to "split" the rear ratio's. It was done more often then than now.
