Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh.

Dogs have anal sacs just inside the opening of their rectum. When the dog defecates, the stool is supposed to express a little bit of the anal sac contents onto the stool itself. (The contents of the anal sacs is actually what dogs are sniffing when they sniff butts or dog poop.)

In some dogs, this anal sac expression doesn't happen normally, either because of an anatomic defect or abnormal consistency of the contents of their anal sacs. So those dogs must have their anal sacs expressed manually every few weeks, or they become uncomfortable and try to express their own anal sacs by scooting their butt on the ground. No big deal if they do this on the grass out in the yard. More of a problem if they do this on your living room carpet.

Now you've learned more than you've ever wanted to know about the anal sacs of dogs.

PS Anal sacs are a great reason to become a veterinary neurologist. You don't have to deal with anal sacs at all. "Not my department."

I took leftover jerk chicken and put it on leftover salad from Papa Murhphy's in a poor imitation of a Thai beef salad. I think it's pretty darned good but LoP won't even try it.

Heat dome has hit us. Going to ride and try stay cool. After the ride, I may have to try some of that New Belgium Fat Tire drink I bought. Would probably go well with some high-sodium ramen.

My wife and I are riding with a group of beginners today on a 40 mile ride. Its the culmination of a program called "I decided" where these beginning cyclists have been working up to this finale since last April.

Great, right? Yeah, until we are headed for the 90s and high humidity on low end bikes and I worry that they haven't been doing their homework.

All we need is a thunderstorm and high winds to make it a perfect morning.

Big fire in town and bad conditions for firefighting- highs of 109F yesterday & today, windy and dry.

Our planned route is no good so we're riding on the other side of town, our plan B ride.

Last ride was at the onset of the heat wave for us, today's ride will be in the tail end. Only about 80° right now, but it doesn't feel like the dew point is too far behind. There will be sweat. Oh, and I might just follow up with the same recovery drink as you.

I'm heading out now with 2 bottles of ice water and am lining up stops along the way just in case. Good luck!

Biscuits in the oven. High altitude, butter-olive oil blend for the shortening, old baking powder, salted shorteningr plus the salt included in the recipe. I guess we'll see how it comes out. Just working with what I had. Cooking in a vacation condo isn't always easy. Stay tuned.

It all comes back to that respect thing. Respect for the hard work to get among the elite. You don't podium in state events without it. And you don't get to officiate at big events (including Olympic trials) without it.
It is a great feeling - much the same thing happened to me back when I was regularly doing tris and after one, a guy came up to me and said he had been trying to chase me for years and I just kept staying ahead no matter what he did. I was absolutely shocked anyone had paid that much attention to me, honestly.

Is "heat dome" the opposite of "polar vortex"?

Watching the Tour and wondering, is the running of the spectators, yelling and gesticulating alonsid the racers appreciated by the racers?
I would think it would be supremely irritating.
