I'm not a religious person but with the world afire, the flag at seemingly perpetual half mast from all the killing insanity, and general craziness, with all this I sometimes wonder that maybe there is an end times scenario approaching.

Mrs. Doug28450 went for a run in the dunes this morning. Unfortunately, she stepped on something and turned her left ankle, quite badly.

Starting to believe it. Although I was just finishing a terrific novel called " Dictator" about ancient Rome and specifically Cicero and thought most era's probably have thought the same thing. One chapter dealing with Caesar and his conquest of the germanic tribes north. There was much disapproval in the senate that he had slaughtered 400,000 prisoners after the battle was won. Pretty grim times.

Up in that area on Wednesday and Thursday as well. Probably not a bad idea as all three days are very busy and getting in a ride on those days would be easier up there than waiting to go back to South Bend.

But I have learned also.... how to clean my handlebar tape, which bike to buy, what color it should be, if I should wash my helmet liner, whether to wash my clothes with each ride, how to wash my clothes, with what I should wash my clothes, how to prevent boils, how to prevent numbness, which is the best saddle, that Brooks is the best saddle, that Cervelo's suck, that steel is real, that carbon trumps steel, that steel trumps carbon, that everything trumps aluminum, that I average 30 mph , that I'm too fat for the sport, that Sram sucks, that Shimano rules, that campy is da bomb, that it's guads not quads, and drope not drop, that the stem should be flipped, that the stem should be 1/5th the distance between the rear axle and the stem top below the saddle, that real cyclists ride in the rain, thet super real cyclists ride in the snow, that only idiots ride in conditions of heat index above 110, that I'm an idiot, that despite being supremely irritating at times, that I actually miss pcad and his wit, that Billy should run for president, that Trump truly is an idiot, wait, I learned that on Facebook not here, that despite the inevitable ebb and flow of personalities, of dissension, of irritation at some of these personalities, that I would likely really enjoy every single persons company as we all share a passion for this thing called cycling.

I've been trying Tailwind drink mix from Durango. Had two bottles of it today and no cramping. Easy on the stomach and the orange is pretty good.

Our beginners did great. They all made it except for a few that got lost in Peoria's largest cemetery which is a maze of up and down hills, valleys, little roads, etc. That's what they get for not sticking with a ride leader.
Anyway, my wife and I only got 24 miles. There were several chaperones and we were handed off the last 8-9 people half way through. Even being the slowest group, they averaged 11.4 mph which I didn't think was too bad on department store bikes.
Considering the heat and humidity, they did great.

I got out early and it was still hot. Took Olde Stage over to Lefthand Canyon and Lefthand is still a mess. Had to turn around and Olde Stage it again, which seemed unfair so soon. Then I went to NCAR. It was really hot by then. Hit 50.8 mph on the way down and passed a motorbike and car on Table Mesa. That was fun. In situations like that, the BMC is money.

I rode by the little memorial for that cyclist killed at 30th and Jay. Racer, three young kids, engineer for google. Driver veered into the bike lane. She was on probation for her first DUI at the time. Alcohol was involved. Post boating, apparently. If I'm going to ride in North Boulder or Boulder proper, I'm going early and getting out of there. On my way back, there were a ton of cyclists out. I happily headed back to SE Boulder. For traffic fatalities, this has been the worse summer since I moved here in 1997.

We are up to 11000 acres burned and 10% containment. Our valley is filled with smoke and the sky is an eerie yellow color. Some of my favorite cycling areas are burning. 1000 homes are threatened right now.

However on the bright side, this just got evacuated to the facility a friend keeps her horses at (obviously outside fire zone).
His name is Herbert and she tells me he is the sweetest thing ever. Has the demeanor of a ginormous puppy! Her horse looks at him like "What the F is wrong with you?!" though. Lol he's kind of afraid of Herbet who just looks all wrong to him.

Alas, Milton passed away last year. I think he was as old as our trail. Now, there is a memorial along the trail for him.
