Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Too hot to ride today. The signs on the road were saying 97 degrees at 10am this morning on the way to church (which was a very sad service, as my friend who died recently was a big part of the church).

Anyways, the only outside thing today was taking the kids to the rec center pool (a TX rec center pool is really a small water park).

It's painful having a new bike not being able to ride it.

I ordered a bunch of kit for the MTB.

Reviews for the Dianese Trail Skins knee and elbow pads seem to be great, as they are very breathable and offer good protection.

I got a Bell Super 2R helmet. It's convertible between full face protection and just good MTB protection (which is more rear protection than a road helmet provides). I did a bad thing and went to a LBS I don't like much and tried it on, then bought it on amazon.

I also got a camelbak skyline. One bottle cage just ain't going to cut it here in TX. My minimum is 48oz. The skyline holds 100, but I don't have to fill it all the way, and I want something low on my back to keep the weight off my hands.

Congrats!

I think this means he doesn't want to go to Rio...

Sleepless because of excitement? The pressure should be off now, right?

And, kudos!

The fire is really really bad. Winds whipped up unexpectedly this afternoon and the fire is now moving multiple directions. It is now working it's way up a ridge towards town, its just one ridge line from very populated areas. Eighteen homes lost already, 1500 people have been evacuated. One person in an evac area was found dead in his car. The high school behind my house is an evac center.

Right now its 105F at 5pm, very low humidity, 20 mph wind gusts and the fire is burning in very rugged terrain. Still only 10% contained, 22000 acres.

One of the freeways is closed and I'm not sure the trains will be running tomorrow.

People around here are walking into each other looking at their phones. One kid said he got two right in the middle of the road !!! Next is middle of the highway.

Fixed wing aircraft can't fly with all the smoke right now, so it's only helicopters doing the water drops and they're just dropping on populated areas. The news just said 50% of LA County's firefighting resources are currently fighting this fire.

Fifth year of a drought, everything is just so incredibly dry.

Bike riding distance. The southwestern edge is a 15ish min warm up ride away. It's 35 sq miles so the northern and western edges are farther away. Ash in the back yard, huge plumes of smoke in the air.

We're pretty much smack dab in the middle of town though. It would take a pretty big inferno to get to us

Sounds a little scary anyway.

If you ride with a bike computer long enough you can say something like "It's 11.87 miles from my driveway".

From the news just now. Fire maybe 1/8 to 1/4 miles away from this neighborhood. It came over the ridge from the time I posted maybe 20 min ago.

Not if you have a coach. Everything is described as X watts for Y minutes! I don't think in miles any more.

Excellent. That's what really counts.

Are you making plans to evacuate if need be? Put the bike rack on the car.
