Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can assure you that his use of a front shift lever was his own desire - and done against the wishes of his sponsors.

How can a brifter that otherwise works not pull enough cable? Isn't everything inside it based around gears and cogs? I'd expect it to either pull correctly or not at all.

I hate clipless pedals.
My golf shoes don't fit into them, my hero Gino Bartali didn't need them and they cost more than $6

They are based around ratchet mechanisms. When they fail, they miss clicks completely or jam up. The only way to get a partial cable pull would be if only the trim portion of the throw was engaging. But that wouldn't leave the cage multiple millimeters short of where it should go. The only cause for that is, well, I think we've covered that.

Actually, it's a ratchet mechanism that is engaged via a clutch. Part of the clutch is sheared off - so it doesn't engage at the point of the most outward derailleur shift. It does engage over the rest of it's range of travel.

5800?

Is he using the 5800 FD?

There is some truth to the OPs claim about limited trim on the 5800.

The Claris, Sora FD have a lot of trim movement to prevent chain rub.

OP, The 5800 is rather limited so needs more care setting up. But once it's set up, it's flawless. Stick with it!

1. No advantage to front brifters? Speed and simpicity. I click, Its in the right place. Granted, it's not necessary, as I ride one bike with friction shifters and it works fine, but it takes ever so slightly more thought.

2. So we've established that Claris and Sora front brifters are better than 5800?

First off all, it is my understanding that Lance used the friction shifter mainly for TT or a few mountain stages for the primary reason of reducing weight. If friction shifting was truly the best way to shift front derailleurs why don't the pros do that?

secondly, i bought a bike with a badly-tuned front derailleur but after a few turns of the screwdriver and a quick cable adjustment I have no chain rub in all 10 gears on both the small and large chain ring. And it shifts fine. EDIT i have a 50-34 compact ...

Sorry yours was broken from the get go, congrats on fixing for 6 dollars. but i still like my brifters better.

Especially with a triple, the indexed front shifting is very much appreciated on the front. Try climbing a hill standing on the pedals in the granny ring then shifting to the middle ring to power over the crest without sitting down using a friction shiftér.

Well both Sora and Claris (and Tiagra) are all available as triples whereas 105 5800 is not.

It's quite simple with barcons.

Ever the pedant But you are right. I should have added 'downtube' in front of 'friction.'

as is Index shifting and way too many Speeds all stacked up on a cassette.

You are being Played.

What's a triple?
it's one base short of a Home Run..

In Houston where the only hill is an Overpass over the shipping channel?

It's something you need when you visit the Pyrenees, on the French-Spanish Border , On Holidays.
