Brake Rubbing Off
Hey guys I hope someone could give me some insight into this problem I've noticed today. I just got a new wheelset (Fulcrum Racing 5) and installed it. I wasn't able to ride very much because of a massive storm but in the little time that I did ride with them, my brakes on my back wheel have rubbed off quite a bit, not so much on the front. The wheels dont seem to be out of true and the brakes seem to have decent clearance. Wondering if I need new brake pads for this type of wheel or not at this point. The wheelset I had previously was the stock Axis classics that come on the Allez.

You are saying the brake pads were blackening the rims? That is fairly normal. It isn't a malfunction, just the result of rubbing the pad against the rim while braking. If it is happening very quickly, it could be due to cheap brake pads. Get some Kool Stop Salmons or Swisstop Yellow Kings.

With my previous wheelset my brake pads would hardly rub off, but with these new wheels only on the backwheel it is rubbing off quite a bit. After riding maybe 2 miles it got to the point where a quick run of the finger on the braking surface would leave my entire fingertip black.

The brake pads are dirty. Grime has built up and is now embedded in them. Remove the wheel (or remove the pads completely from the holders). Then give them a good scrubbing with hot water, soap and a scourer. Do this periodically and also thoroughly clean the rims brakiing surface in the same way.
If you leave the black grimy paste on there, the rims and brake pads will wear down faster. Cleaning them regularly will prolong their life.
You dont need any special brake pads no. If the brake pads are basic no branded ones and are badly worn. It would be a good opportunity to upgrade them to Swisstop and Koolstop to improve the braking performance.

Yes, but they work extraordinarily well on aluminum.
