Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New bike clicking gears

I picked up my new bike today and from about the first or second gear change the chain has been clicking. It also slipped a number of times on the first few changes. I'm a complete newbie returning to cycling after many many years and other than guessing something in the gears needs adjusting I'm not really sure what is wrong or what to do about it. I've tried looking it up but it's just made me more confused.

Maybe a stiff link in the chain?

Chances are the rear derailleur needs a few turns to tighten the cable. I recently had to do this one mine. One can definitely make a better determination if you can post a video. But if you look up "index rear derailleur" ad probably skip the H and L setting portion, you should be able to dial it in. It's probably like 2 or 4 clicks out of being perfect.

That being said, take it to where you bought it and have them show you for free.

That clicking is probably the chain just barely touching the next cog over and "trying" to shift. Adjust the derailleur to fix this.

Definitely take it back to where you bought it and let them fix it for you.
