Hahahahahahahahahahahaha...I know exactly what you mean. I have similar experience with one of my businesses. At least they are trying. I respect that.

I do my own maintenance. most things can be done with just and allen key set anyway. I wash the chain, then oil it and that's about it. I should check the screws are all tight but I can't be bothered.

I DIY what I can, and take it to the LBS for emergency operations if I really botched it up or chickened out.

I'm a DIYer, but there's no reason to do much on the bike myself beyond fixing flats and lubing the chain. If I wanted to turn wrenches I would have been a mechanic, I have better things to do with my limited time.

I'm somewhere in between. Trending towards DIY as I go. It ain't rocket science- assuming your starting point is a functional bike anyway.

Is replacing BB, derailers, fork, handlebar, pedals, seat, brakes, chain, cables and housings considered "building" a bike? It's basically the same thing, but not done all at once...You may have built " a frame" already without even knowing

I build frames with a torch, lathe, mill, benders, and jigs.

I build up bicycles with hand tools.

I think I'm getting dangerously close to crossing the line of "I really, really should have just taken it to the bike shop" :/

But, I'm sure tonight I'll find another 10 writeups and YouTube videos to help me finish this up. Thank you, Internet.

You'll survive. Take an extra stem-spacer with you so that when the head-set settles and things loosen up, you can snug it up for the ride home, then trim the steerer tube.

I thought we talking "frame" as a putting bicycle with new components together...To me building a FRAME is something out of our galaxy ;-)

You're not really building a bike until you hand build all of the components as well.

Not too many folks can do that due to the casting requirements of parts like derailleurs and cranks although companies like Raleigh and Schwinn used to build everything in house until derailleur bicycles took over.

    No.

Starting with a pile of tubes and CONSTRUCTING a bike is "building" a bike
