Friend killed Saturday
Biking in ride across Iowa he was struck from behind and killed instantly.
Another guy in the group was run over a dragged while in his tent. Luckily he was not fatally injured.
I wear a neon green jersey, flashing red light but what else can we do to increase visibity?
It won't protect you from a texting driver.
You all be careful don't drop your guard.

Sorry to hear about it. There is clearly some inherent risk in riding. We all try to minimize the risk, but bad stuff happens. I make it clear to my family that I love riding and ride as safely as possible, but if something happens, you know...
My condolences to your friend and his family.

Wow. So sorry to hear this. Whenever I hear about incidents like this, it makes me wonder whether the joy of riding is worth the risk. Sure, there are risks in all parts of life, but it seems crazy to think that you could be hit and killed by a driver that is texting or drunk. What a terrible thing to happen. Sorry for your loss.

So.... sorry.... wow, we all consider the risks (we think), but there are always some variables we just cannot predict.... not to mention that in some states (mine included), taking out a cyclist is a misdemeanor.....
Please be safe!

Visibility only goes so far; people fail to see fire trucks with their strobes on! But you can consider your lane position, too, and how you can make your intentions obvious to drivers. Maybe neon, retroreflective straps on your ankles, where they're constantly moving?

News report was that the group set up their tents and went to sleep. Shortly before midnight someone came into the campground with a big travel trailer and went way off the road, hit the group leader's tent and dragged it with him inside for some distance. The driver kept going to his own campsite. The group leader was seriously injured and doctors indicated he's expected to be hospitalized for three months.

I'm still trying to imagine the situation. Camped inside a corner? I can't think of any place I've erected a tent that would put me at risk of it getting hit by a car, unless the car drives across some big boulders and through some trees.
