Replacing 10sp FSA crankset

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replacing 10sp FSA crankset

Hi all,

Was riding and the pedal threads on my FSA SLK carbon pro compact crankset stripped out. I currently run Dura-Ace 7800 shifters/derailleurs that came with my bike, so it would have to be compatible with those. I don't really care about weight any more as I no longer race as I did when I got the bike. I think I currently have the FSA mega-exo BB but am not completely sure of this.

I was considering the Tiagra 4650 or a 105 5750 compact crankset, and would probably pair them with the 6800 Ultegra BB. Just wondering if anyone else has recommendations. I'm more interested in low price than true performance level stuff anymore but do want decent performance.

Thanks!

5800 is worlds better than 5750 in terms of shifting IME, the rings are stiffer with refined shaping. I don't have experience with tiagra 4700 but it should probably be similar

Wow, I'm pretty out of the loop. I wasn't even aware there were 58-- and 47-- chainsets... Is the 5800 compatible with the 10sp 7800 shifters/derailleurs?

I asked about having the treads repaired but the LBS didn't think they'd have much luck with it (it is a pretty small shop).

Why go cheap and heavy if you can pick up a nice one on the cheap?

Do you have any interest in a standard crank?

Yeah, I've considered it since I'm mostly riding flats and on a KKRM trainer nowadays... when I originally bought the bike w/ a compact crankset, I was riding in much hillier terrain.

Both the 4700 and 5800 look quite nice. I suppose weight and the ability to go to 11spd, if I ever so desired, would be the adv. of the 5800?

FC-5800 is heavier than FC-5750. Tiagra is even heavier. It's probably to make it easier to spot when a OEM uses a non-series crank.

Checked the Bb and it is indeed a megaexo bracket. Will I need to get a Shimano BB or are thre hollowtech 2 cranks compatible with megaexo?

Any 10 speed crank will work with its appropriate bottom bracket. Also, I believe any 11-speed crank will work too (with appropriate BB); You'd just need to switch to an 11-speed chain.

Megaexo (non-Omega) is kind of compatible with Shimano Hollowtech II.
