You guys are cute. Not only do I not fully shave my legs. I wear $20 amazon shorts. Have a 24 pound 2016 $1000 bike (9 speed as you could probably figure). I wear a flappy jersey and an intro helmet (i.e. cheap) I also use the all so not pro 28c tires.
It's amazing how much one can judge a person off a post, how much elaboration is done so poorly.
I'm not the fashion police, I'm the logic detective. (though I will freely admit it does look stupid)

Had I done this thread with better taste and left out the word 'Fred' all things would have been different. But because most of you wear long socks you take offense.
As some have called out: the point of this thread is not about my arbitrary opinion on fashion but rather the objective logic behind cycling apparel and why do we wear what we wear.

The socks ... come on guys. Aside from looking pro (and by 'pro' I mean idiot) it's pretty Fredish in my mind.
It's pointless. We strive for the least weight and the most aerodynamic we can get. Personally I look at everyone with long socks as a Fred, even if they are (and most are) faster than me.

Sock length is about fashion so you can't separate the two. Why do people wear anything they wear?

Fashion also dictates the availability of clothing. If something is in style it will be readily available. If it isn't in style it's harder to find.

Fortunately, short socks are still easy to find.
People that publicly judge other riders because of equipment/clothing choice (unless it's actually dangerous) are literally the single most annoying part of this whole cycling universe.

My dad and brother wear 'pro' socks and I tell them the same thing but we have no problems.
I said in the glove thread that Ones perception doesn't necessarily equal reality. I stand by that.
Do you really need an answer to why do people wear anything they wear? Come on man, lets be real here.
But If you all say I judge people than by what criteria do you use to make your '**********????' about me? (over most heads?) Opps I'm off judging again.
Hopefully we all live to ride another day!
Cheers mates!

When did I ever say I don't judge people? I do make assumptions based on whats in front of me. Like I also said most people I see with long (or for better sake, pro looking) socks are in fact faster than me.

There is one important point to long socks- being able to tuck your pant leg into them.

WOW! The OP just threw gasoline on this dying thread and BOOM we're going to add a few more pages to one of the most pointless threads. (and I'm part of the problem).

Possibly, but any shoe is going to be hotter than just a flat pedal, I've grown quite accustomed to having wind-whipped cool dry feet (well some really hot days they still sweat but still feel cooler with the air flow). I really have no interest in supporting the shoe market either, and your shoe idea is more jury-rigged, expensive, and probably less comfortable than my idea. I also don't like being restricted to an exact position the entire ride. Sometimes on longer rides it's nice to move your butt around on the saddle, hands around the bars, feet are no different around on the pedal. I like to give my calves a little rest now and then by going more heel-centric on the pedals.
Plus I wouldn't be that odd ball barefoot guy that I've grown to enjoy being
I am sorry to hear you get so surprised--no, disgusted, about what someone else wears on their feet. Why do you get so offended what someone else decides to wear, especially if it means dry and healthy feet, not stuck into foot and gait damaging foot coffins that are also the ideal breeding grown for bacteria and fungus? Should I be offended that you aren't wearing gloves, since you're 1,000x more likely to germs via bare hands, even breathing? But I do understand where you are coming from, it's so ingrained into our society now as status symbol of a 1st world country (unfortunately). I get grossed out when I see others bare feet often, not so much habitually barefoot people that actually have strong healthy feet but shod people remove their shoes and release all sorts of aforementioned bacteria and fungus, and reveal deformed twisted toes, hammer toes, bunions, etc, etc all caused by shoes. I may be lucky our downtown sidewalks and streets are pretty clean. I've never been on a subway but I've heard those are pretty filthy, I might cover up there. And I have been accidently spit on in a race once, by a girl running next to me that just turned her head and spit without even looking. Right on my leg. She did a half hearted apology but in the middle of a race I didn't even care. I survived. Do you go to the beach? Or are you a double standard kind of guy where it's perfectly fine to see a bare foot in one setting but in another the sight is horrible?

Do you have any advice for becoming more barefoot?
I do construction work & wear steel toe boots, & don't see that changing too much,
but would like to be more 'footwear optional'.

People that judge others' equipment/clothing choices as dangerous based on their own riding style and conditions (and not that of the actual cyclist(s) being judged) are pretty annoying, too, i.e. the helmet police.

Sure. Don't disagree with that. Live and let live, unless it could potentially affect me, like a brakeless fixie or TT bike showing up for a group ride I'm leading.

Long socks and mountain baggies can do great things on cold days! Which brings to mind another pointless topic for a thread:
If a person is gravel riding, does he/she/it dress in roadie kit or mountain biking kit? Tough one there. Hhhhhmmmmm.

I do a lot of gravel riding and I'd say the vast majority of the riders out there wear roadie kit.

The TT thing happens all the time with triathletes and organized group rides, despite clear instructions that they are not welcome on their TT bikes. The fixie thing is rare, but has happened.

I was on a big organized ride about 2 or 3 years ago. There is this stretch about a mile from the start that is slightly downhill. The packs are big and moving pretty fast at that point. I'm in this group of about 25. Up through the middle of the group comes this 20 something female proudly displaying the kit of her tri club. She is on a tri bike with that huge aero water bottle/straw combo in the middle of her handlebars. She is riding in the aero position with her forearms on the bars and her hands dangling/hanging loose out front. She is also taking a big sip with that straw in her mouth. Well, some riders see this and, ...................she gets yelled at. Her and her 2 companions take offense to it and drop back.
