Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ritchey WCS protocols

I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience with these wheels?

There is a local seller that is selling a pair for $95. The front wheel is perfect but the rear wheel has a "small hop" and says it's only noticeable on a truing stand.

Should I be concerned about that hop? Or will it ride just fine?

Try them. Hard to say. I wouldn't buy wheels that had a unresolvable hop.

How did the hop get there? A botched build/adjustment or a pothole? The former is an easy, 5 minute max fix. The latter you are likely stuck with forever. Biggest problem with good-sized wheel 'hops' is aligning brake pads. If it is really tiny (less than 1mm) you likely won't have any issues.

The seller isn't sure how the hop got there, but he says had he not mentioned it no one would really notice. Is $95 a good price for the wheelset?

^this.

May not be "noticeable" until something fails.

Seems like $95 is a great price assuming the hop isn't actually noticeable, and the wheels haven't been abused, don't have tons of miles on them and worn out brake tracks, and if a 8/9/10 speed freehub works for you (no plans to go 11 speed). Without seeing them and knowing your intended use I can't say if any of the above is true.

Generally factory built wheel are pretty tight and true. If the hop can't be taken out of it then that's likely a problem in manufacturing or in the rim because it should be really simple to get it out. They obviously weren't shipped that way from the factory (would never have passed outgoing inspection) so it is very likely that it came from being used/abused. So if that doesn't come out, then I'd have to think they are pretty suspect and probably explains the low price.

If it were me, I'd pass.
