It seems like he wasn't sure what to say. It's like his entire understanding of what vintage bikes are is based on modern marketing material, and he expected the '92 bike to just kind of wobble and shake below him as he put power into the pedals.

Then he hopped on the road bike, and - SHOCKING NEWS - it felt like a road bike. But he still felt like he had to phrase it in terms of modern marketing material, so all we got was comments along the lines of "the stiffness is fine."

These videos should probably be done by people who actually ride a lot of vintage bikes, so they could identify compelling qualitative things (and perhaps discuss history) beyond "this bike seems to be doing what it should do." Actual performance measurements* would be cool too. There was very little comparison in this comparison.

*Preferably taken on well-maintained bikes that fit and which the operator knows how to use, unlike that "How Much Faster Are Modern Bikes" GCN video where he literally didn't even know how to use the front shifter until halfway through the run on the vintage bike.

The old carbon Treks with carbon tubes and aluminum joints sucked. They sucked the power right out of you and didn't put it on the road. My '99 5200 OCLV bike remains the best endurance bike I've ever ridden.

I don't get why some riders wobble the front wheel back and forth when out of the saddle. I know, many great pros do that. But many other riders simply rock the bike and let it track straight instead of moving the contact patch from side to side. Opinions?

A bit disapointing..

As some have said in the comments. It felt a though he was being very positve about Trek as they are a sponsor of GCN. He just spent loads on a project one bike. The 92 was from Treks museum.

sooooo... the latest and greatest and Tour Mag-tested-stiffest bike with megaultra fat cf-shaped tubes...... doesnt seem to ride all that much differently from an old cf bike in its infancy... according to ex- uci continental pro

and then we got weekend freds debating the merits of a new roubaix vs a caad and how one feels stiffer and faster than the other

The people who are complaining about the video... what did you expect? Bikes are bikes. His P1 Madone is beautiful, but do you think it will feel dramatically different than a 25 year old top-level race bike?

Plus, Trek invited him to Wisconsin to tour the factory and ride a bike straight out of their museum while picking up his custom bike. Of course he's not going to slag the old one and say his first Huffy was a better bike.

My thought was actually how crisp the shifts sounded on the 8sp DA. I've never ridden any STI groupsets older than '99, so I guess I was expecting the original generation to be sloppy and imprecise by comparison, but from the look/sound of it, it wasn't either of those things.

not sure the vintage of the 8-speed RSX i had. but i just remember those sti functioning superbly. but then again i didnt hate DTs either.

I ride 8 speed 105 (from 1995) and the shifting is a-ok. I've ridden 11 speed ultegra and I'd say it's only slightly better as far as actual shifting is concerned (mainly in the front).

It's pretty difficult I think to not rock the back when really pushing hard. It's not just standing but the hard effort that forces the bike to lean the opposite way on each down stroke.

I also think maybe the front wheel "wobble" is exaggerated because we're watching it in slo-mo. Pretty sure everyone does that when pushing it out of the saddle.

My dad rides a carbon bike of similar vintage, though it is a Specialized, with the same 8 speed DA sti. I ride it sometimes when I'm over there if I didn't bring a bike of my own. It weighs 17 lbs and rides pretty good.

Truth. Now, if you were talking one of the first Kestrals from the late 80's, sure, I'd call that vintage. The 5500 is prettier, especially the 8 speed Dura Ace.
