Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Selecting the right Shimano cassette

My wife has an older carbon fiber Trek road bike. I need to replace her 8 speed cassette as well as her chain rings. Will any 8 speed Shimano cassette work? My biggest concern is that her bike is around 25 years old and things may have changed.

Remove the wheel and take a photo of your current cassette and freehub and someone can answer. Also verify that it is 8 speeds and not 7 speed. Shimano?

There have been a couple of different standards over the years. With 8 speed, you probably have the "modern" version, but the only way to know for sure is to see what you have.

Wow a 25 year old CF bike!

If you can't work it out, a cheap way to experiment is that BikeWagon have some Cannondale 8 speed cassette take-offs.

For $7.99 shipped to your door you can see if it works and not be too out of pocket if it doesn't. The cassettes are perfectly fine.

Yes. That is assuming you are correct about it being an 8 speed Shimano cassette and you are replacing it with the same tooth count. 8 speed Shimano cassettes are cheap, no need to go with the Sunrace. Get a new chain as well.
