Nitrocellulose? You can buy that? Crazy explosive. These days I wouldn't think that would be allowed to be on the open market. OTOH it is pretty easy to make...for a chemist, so I guess there is no escaping it. What makes it desirable as a finish instead of say cellulose acetate which is much safer?
I don't think the finish product itself is as explosive as you think. But I did follow all of the recommended safety procedures about inhalation, etc (I ain't dumb).

I used it because I wanted to spray thin coats to get the type of look I wanted. Also, I do a fair amount of stringed instrument repair, and working with the stuff is a skill I needed to acquire at some point. It was really easy to do, in fact. Way the hell better than the experience I had with traditional furniture finishes like minwax crap. Instruments use it because it screws with the sound properties in just the right way (not the old school violin guys... they swear anything other than an oil finish is crap, even if it takes 2 months to dry).

Nitro lacquer is a standard finish that's been in use for decades. It's whats used on all guitars, etc...
I don't think the finish product itself is as explosive as you think. But I did follow all of the recommended safety procedures about inhalation, etc (I ain't dumb).

Nitromethane, good race car fuel. Explosivity seems to stem from multple nitro- groups on the same molecule as in TNT, nitroglycerin, nitrocellulose, etc.

* One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic-inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows at the Daytona 500.
* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 11.2 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced.

Putting this all into perspective:
Lets say the you are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter twin-turbo powered Corvette Z06.
Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged & ready to launch down a quarter-mile strip as you pass by it. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the ‘Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line & pass the dragster at an honest 200 MPH. Just as you pass the Top Fuel Dragster the ‘tree’ goes green for both of you.
The dragster launches & starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums & within 3 seconds the dragster catches & passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter-mile away from where you just passed him.
