Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, because your SuperFive Di6 with titanium bar tape and tires made by Lord Elrond looks like crap.

Just felt like saying that.

When I used to race motorcycles, one of the older racers and a mentor to a lot of us younger racers(at the time) used to say "a clean bike is a fast bike." I believe it. My drivetrain, wheels, brakes, and tires are nearly always spotless. So yeah, clean your damned bike.

When you get to owning three, four, five bikes it becomes harder to give a crap. But then again, I dont own any unobtainium wonder bikes.

I clean mine, but I don't get everything. Wonder how much extra the caked on dirt weighs.

Much of that has to do with being detail oriented and ensuring everything is properly adjusted.
A poorly adjusted chain is likely to be noticed if you're cleaning the chain regularly.

That being said: I'm not sure I lubed the chain on my poor motorcycle more than once this year.

I was never huge on cleaning my bikes, but recently I read an article on the subject and have been trying to turn over a new leaf.

I now wash my bike after every ride. It takes me about 5 minutes since nothing is that dirty. It's a nice way to relax at the end of the ride and it tricks the mind a bit into thinking you're riding a new flashy bike every time you get on it.

The downside, it's become another addiction. I spent about 30 minutes yesterday reading reviews on brushes that would fit between my chainstays and the wheel. I also got really excited about buying degreaser at Lowes this weekend.

For bicycles...

A fast bike is the one that spends hours on the road, year-around, rain or shine.

Not hanging on the wall looking pretty.
