I don't really have one. Somebody just got an Apple Watch and wants to know if it's useful for cycling. Someone else told him it's an expensive way to find motivation. And I thought that was kind of silly because people who shell out this kind of money and spend this much time on a bike, and who get really fancy new stuff and immediately want to know how to use it for cycling, are already extremely motivated. So I posted that, was corrected about what the watch costs, you thought I was besmirching Apple's honor, and now I'm supposed to have a point. It's just a random comment in a discussion.
Internet forum... I forget sometimes.

The iPhone 'Health' app is where the Strava integration is configured.
The Watch has nothing to do with it.
The tracked activities can then be viewed in both the iPhone & Watch 'Activity' apps.
This has been possible for a long time, since iOS 8 I believe. I've had mine set up this way for over a year.

I meant that it took Apple a year to release an OS that allows other apps to update the activity app. When the watch was released originally, it did not do this.
This is very exciting news to me because it didn't do this previously. I had pretty much given up on the watch as you could tell from my previous posts.
I wonder if you don't use strava on the watch and instead use your garmin...which uploads to Garmin Connect, which uploads to Strava...if that would then update the activity app and the rings?
I know some people would say why do you need to have it do all that, but it'd be nice to have all of my activity data compiled into one place. I'm currently using a Vivomove which updates to Garmin Connect, which works well since my 820 uploads there as well, so all of my activity is in Garmin Connect, but it'd be nice to be able to use the Apple Activity App UI as well and get everything syncing back and forth so I could switch between the vivomove and the apple watch when I felt like it. I guess I have some experimenting to do this weekend.

Previously using 3rd party apps would only track as activity, and not as logged workouts (w/ time distance/HR/etc).

The only thing that's changed is the way the Activity app displays the info.

Right. It's a big difference. Activity app goes from saying "you burned x calories over Y time" pre-ios 10 to "you burned x calories over y time while on a bike ride with an average pace a, an average HR of b, and a distance of c over time d according to the Strava app."

I got rose gold (to match my pink chris king hubs...seriously) and my partner got jet black. We both bought clear plastic cases. It'll be interesting to see which gets here first.

For example, right now if I go into the Activity app on my phone, I can see that I rode my bike twice yesterday in the workout tab. On the History tab (which shows the activity rings), none of the rings have filled in. If I scroll down, I see a few grey bars and a strava note next to them under the red Move chart. If I swipe right, it tells me I burned 2068 calories. There is nothing listed in the Exercise chart, same for the Stand chart.
I want apple to allow the rings to be filled in without using the apple specific activity apps on the watch.

This is a very good question. To which I don't have the answer.

I understand what you're saying and I know this. The Health App and Activity App sync with each other. If I do a cycling activity on the watch, it updates the Activity App/Rings and Health app accordingly. Before, if I didn't use the cycling activity on the watch, my garmin/strava would still update the Health app, but not the Activity App/Rings on the watch/iphone - because of this, the activity app/rings on the watch won't show you worked out because you didn't use the watch to record it, so you wouldn't get credit for the workout that day.
Yeah, this is what I ran into. Which is what I was complaining about. So I believe my original statement still holds true...
If you use anything else to record your ride, other than the Apple Cycling Activity on the watch, the watch's activity rings don't update to show your workout/activity.

In other words, for the last ~year:
1. My Garmin records my ride.
2. Garmin Connect pushes my ride to Strava.
3. Strava pushes the data to my iPhone Health app.
4. I can view my ride metrics as Workouts in my iPhone & Watch Activity apps.
5. The Activity Rings on both my iPhone & Watch reflect the activity.
Again, for the better part of a year here folks.
Maybe it helps that I'm in IT and read the instructions, lol(?)

I have not used the activity app at all this week. Only the Strava app on my watch. 7 rides total. I filled all my rings on the days I rode. So I don't seem to be having the same problem you're describing.
Here's some sample screen shots:

Were you running the 10 beta because all but your #4 I have had for some time, but #4 was not true until I updated to ios10, and I believe it was only unveiled as a feature in 10, as described in the "Activity App" section of the review here: https://michaeltruskowski.com/a-fitn...-3-and-ios-10/

These are my screens...as you can see, they don't sync for me.
I'll have to spend some time going through all of my settings again as I haven't bothered much since I first got the watch way back when it was originally released.
Everything in the Health app is correct, it's even pulling my sleeping data and everything from Garmin Connect.

I also dabble in IT when I'm not stuck in Excel all day at work. I also RTFM (granted it was a over a year ago).

So I would start there.
PM me and I can help you go through the setup that works for me.

I'm going to boot up the watch this weekend and install the new os...then run through all the settings and everything again and see if I can get it to flow.
I just noticed there's no Heart Rate information when you click on the strava workout too.
I'll figure it out. It's just nice to see that it does in fact update the rings...of course, this means I'll probably go back to being a slave to activity streaks, haha.

Also thanks to you both for letting me know about this. It makes me excited to give the watch another try.
My boss said the new os is night and day to the older ones too, so I have hope!

Yeah, I noticed that too, I haven't messed with settings in so long I'm not sure what I was trying to get at back when I did that.
