Purchasing advice needed for new Tarmac S-Works frameset
Hey guys,
I'm interested in purchasing a new 2017 Specialized Tarmac S-Works frameset from my local LBS. Price range is between $3750-4000. What kind of discount, if any, should I expect?
Thanks!

Why don't you ask your LBS?
Specialized seems to be pretty anal about protecting their dealers/pricing, so I'd be surprised if you were to get much of a deal, 'specially if it's not already in stock at the shop.

I would expect 0 discount unless you have some sort of relationship with the owner or a team discount etc. I wouldn't expect a discount on a current year bike and especially not on a S Works frameset which they will most likely be specially ordering for you.

I did say except, if any, discount. They obviously have all the rights in the world to stick at msrp. And as a buyer I have every right to get the best deal for a S-Works or Emonda, SuperSix, or even Canyon, when it come here, next year.

What you can do is call around to other bike shops to get price quotes. If you find a better price, tell your LBS and ask them to beat it. Otherwise, bike shops are having trouble enough staying in business these days so they probably won't give you a discount on a 2017 model. If you want a discount, look at the 2016 end-of-year sales.

I've been shopping for one as well. The 2017's about $500 off, however the 2016's I've been quoted $2500 on any remaining colors. Tempting.

I was accused of being condescending when I said this on another thread. I swear people are clueless.

I would expect that, on a new frameset that'll likely have to be ordered, this would be a good way to get stonewalled. When a distributor/manufacturer get a cluster of calls inquiring about the availability of a specific item, they're not afraid to tell their dealers that they're one of many getting the same call from the same customer. In the audio business, this usually resulted in a uniform line-in-the-sand price or an outright "we're not going to do business with you, please call your regional dealer" if the customer was calling from another state/city.

Did some leg work and got some good pricing. One dealer is willing to give me 15% off any 2017 minus the Contador chrome model. I can have any 2016 frameset for 30% off.

Tell them you'll pay with CASH. They should give you a 3%-5% discount.

Optically Corrected
On a brand new "hi-end" '17 model, this would be all that I would expect from a LBS... as stated previously, it all depends on the relationship that you have established with them.
My LBS also offers 25-30% off any accessories bought at the same time. Good time to get the "matching helmet", bottle cages etc!

Seriously?
Tell them you'll pay with CASH, and you want it for 10% over cost, otherwise just get one off ebay.
Here's a brand new, never been built, uncut steerer for $2800.

I've ordered two bikes, well 1 frame and 1 complete bike, from two different LBS. In both cases, I paid full retail price. Neither brand allowed internet sells.
The frame only was the last one in that size and color for the model year. I ended up calling several LBS in town and within 2 hours drive before I could find one that could get the frame (note sure why one LBS could get it but the others couldn't). The complete bike was also the only one available in the states at the time. It would have to been ordered from Italy if they still had the size left.
The question to ask is what is more important to you the frame that you want or the price that you will end up paying for it? I would go in expecting full retail price and if they discount great, but would not expect it. Especially if you don't do much business with the LBS today.

If you do the math, that was a significant savings.
The LBS had no risk or cash layout and the profit, while maybe smaller, was all profit and significantly more that the profit from the average sale.

When i purchased a Trek Emonda SLR "Project One" it was a custom order. I offered to pay cash up front and since it was not out of inventory the LBS has zero cash to layout. At the end of the transaction i received a 18% discount.

I'm guessing 10% off. Will you be buying any more stuff from them? If so, you can do a package deal...just make sure they are competitive on the other stuff. The 2016 framed may be SCS-spaced so watch out for that. The 2015 I have is not SCS-spaced, but I was told that the 2016 is SCS-spaced. If that is correct, you have to work around this if you want a regular wheelset.
I would not pay full price for a frame set. Get last year's model or work the shop (nicely) by offering cash and buying other stuff from them. Also, go to other shops. There are dealers here who will stick to MSR but others who will absolutely discount Specialized frames and bikes. In fact, one would not discount the Tarmac frame I bought and then when I got it somewhere else at about $800 off, the first dealer was aghast. Well, eff you my friend. I gave the morons another chance on another bike (a fat bike) which was last year's model. The sales guy said 10% off. I asked him if that was his best and he said yes. I got the exact same model for almost 30% off at the other shop. Then the 10% shop told me they could have matched it. No thanks- why would I give you the business when you play games? So they lost two sales in a week. I also ended up getting a lot of parts from the better shop. In fact, I did not even have a prior relationship with the better shop while I have been going to the 10% shop for years- one frame, one fork, probably over $1,000 of gear and $3,000 worth of parts.
So shop around in person, visit more shops, try to pay cash, treat the guys well, and avoid sales guys in big shops. Talk to the fit guy or the manager. That was my experience anyway.
