When the MUP is busy, I use my bell. When it is not, I usually say "coming up on your left" unless I ding the bell twice but from a distance. It tends to surprise people when too close.

What about all the Richards? Some things just can't be censored.

The correct response to this situation is to shout back at them "Buy a mirror, [insert favourite expletive]."
If someone needs every other person on the MUP to call out their intention to pass then they should take some personal responsibility and get themselves a mirror.

Is a mirror really effective at seeing behind you? The bike mirrors are so tiny and I'm sure they vibrate. Haven't tried one but am open to it, so serious question.

We here in Central Florida are awaiting the completion of the "Coast to Coast Trail" which will span 250 miles when done. If you check out the link below it shows the route, they've already started on the South Lake and Orange Gap shown in red. Some new sections are paved and open while others are just cleared out and surveyed. I can't wait to go Coast to Coast one day. To the op, I'd bet you just startled the guy and calling you a Dick was a knee jerk reaction on his part. I ride a mup quite often solo and hardly get passed but every so often someone will blow by me and it definitely wakes you up. I usually find some motivation from that sudden burst of adrenaline and try to keep up without "being a dick" and clinging to his wheel!

Richie out of Richard I get, but dick? Marge out of Margaret I get, but peg? Rob from Robert I get, but bob? This is the real story here.

You always let people know you're passing unless you want to take the chance you will be involved in an accident.

It's not the worse thing in the world within the context of a post, but as a thread title ... nyet.

Common courtesy, simply say 'on left'. You don't know if the person on your right is thinking about swerving left to avoid a pothole or debris. I've been silently passed on the road by inches and have been tempted to "stretch" my left arm. I appreciate the other rider probably respects my line and assumes I am predictable, but it does not come across as any shared respect, it comes across as dickish.
I wouldn't call them dicks, but rude, yes. They made a big assumption that everyone they passed would hold their line. Now, we're talking about riders who were two and three abreast and obviously just casual riders. Again, really??
