Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No and no! I didn't want him to go home and write a thread about it in the Vespa forums.

When the MUP is busy, I use my bell. When it is not, I usually say "coming up on your left" unless I ding the bell twice but from a distance. It tends to surprise people when too close.

The correct response to this situation is to shout back at them "Buy a mirror, [insert favourite expletive]."

If someone needs every other person on the MUP to call out their intention to pass then they should take some personal responsibility and get themselves a mirror.

Is a mirror really effective at seeing behind you? The bike mirrors are so tiny and I'm sure they vibrate. Haven't tried one but am open to it, so serious question.

We here in Central Florida are awaiting the completion of the "Coast to Coast Trail" which will span 250 miles when done. If you check out the link below it shows the route, they've already started on the South Lake and Orange Gap shown in red. Some new sections are paved and open while others are just cleared out and surveyed. I can't wait to go Coast to Coast one day. To the op, I'd bet you just startled the guy and calling you a Dick was a knee jerk reaction on his part. I ride a mup quite often solo and hardly get passed but every so often someone will blow by me and it definitely wakes you up. I usually find some motivation from that sudden burst of adrenaline and try to keep up without "being a dick" and clinging to his wheel!

You always let people know you're passing unless you want to take the chance you will be involved in an accident.

Then you tap them on the shoulder before speaking. That's the polite way to do it.

I appreciate the other rider probably respects my line and assumes I am predictable, but it does not come across as any shared respect, it comes across as dickish.
I had a similar experience last week while on a metric century ride. Lots of riders of all ages and abilities. About five miles from the end, with no heads up, two riders passed inches from my left. Fortunately, it was quiet enough that I heard them and wasn't totally startled. Now, this was on a two lane county road with more than enough room to pass with a two foot space. I watched as they did the same thing to riders ahead. I was going right around 16 mph and that were doing 20+. Ah, but a couple of minutes later, the same thing with another pair of riders. Really?? Just out of curiosity I sped up after they were about 10 meters ahead and they were right at 22 mph. So, I just tagged along until the end of the ride and they did the same thing to every rider they passed. They were so focused on just themselves, that the second rider blew right through a left turn that the the first guy and myself made. Sure enough, here comes the second guy sprinting pass me to catch up to his buddy.

I wouldn't call them dicks, but rude, yes. They made a big assumption that everyone they passed would hold their line. Now, we're talking about riders who were two and three abreast and obviously just casual riders. Again, really??

So, when you decided to follow along, did you call 'on your left' to everyone your now group of three passed?
