Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

recommend some cx disc winter wheels

I just picked up a S-Works Crux w/ tubies. The tubies will be great for cross, but I really intend the bike as my cold weather commuter w lights and fenders, so I need a set of cheap winter wheels. The bike is QR Skewers and bolt pattern disc (160mm I think).

My priorities are
1) tubeless
2) reasonably light (hoping <= 1500g)
3) reasonably cheap (hoping <= $400)
4) suitable for 25mm to 32mm tires

I will consider aluminum. I will consider 28-40mm carbon, probably direct from china.

Who can recommend something they know first hand is a great option / seller?

velocity a23 reflective with deore hubs. QBP/handspun makes a set you can order from your LBS or any wheel builder.

Stans No Tubes Grail. Not light, but cheap, you should be able to buy them as take offs.

Yeah- Stan's.

I have a set of S33s 24mm for rain rides on the CX bike that are working well.

They're cheap, so-so ride & grip, hold air really well, & get mixed reviews for durability.

Haven't gotten a flat w/ a Tufo yet, but IME w/ other tires, the sealant works well

& a puncture means losing some pressure, but not having to stop.

I just took my Axis 2.0 6-bolt disc wheels off and replaced them with some carbon tubeless wheels. My Axis 2.0 was 11 speed and regular tubes. However, they were solid and in the 300 miles I rode them, they remained true and round. So for the winter, maybe look for takeoffs like that. If you were close, I'd even let you try them out. I'll sell them locally, when I get to it. I tend to be lazy when it comes to selling things. Another option is the Axis 4.0. Both are inexpensive and reliable.

I had a set of the Stan's Grails on my Crux, to replace the Axis wheels. Ran them tubeless and had no issues other than the sealant when they were originally set up, Stan's, dried up after a few weeks. Switched to Orange Seal and didn't have any issues.

I am still waiting on the centerlock Bitex disc hubs to build up my 40mm carbon tubulars from Hongfu (same rims as UAM). As far as service, customization, and quality of finish, I wouldn't hesistate to recommend them.

With 24/28 F/R Sapim CX Ray spokes, the wheelset should be under 1400 grams for right around $500.

If you're considering Chinese rims, I'd say Light Bicycle.

I still have my teeth.

Then again most of my riding's on Campagnolo Vento wheels, the carbon fibre ones being "formal/dress up" (just kidding - they're currently out of order to be rebuilt with disc brake hubs early next year. :-)

You can adapt 6 bolt rotors to centerlock hubs but not the reverse.

Adapter example: Shimano Centerlock to 6-Bolt Rotor Adapter | Competitive Cyclist

+1 for light bicycle. Used them on a few builds, including a MTB that has seen 3 years of abuse and still going strong.

I do believe Light Bicycle are the OEM manufacturers for Specialized Roval wheels. About a year and a half ago, Light Bike had a statement to the effect of "...designed in partnership with Specialized engineers...". It was removed shortly thereafter, not surprisingly. The LB rims were, not sure if they still are, eerily similar to Rovals.

With that said, rims are $150'ish, probably closer to $175 delivered, which kinda blows your budget out of the water. But they'd be bulletproof if you got them built w/dt 350 hubs x 32 hole, but thats a $8-900 wheelset. Could go with Shimano / cheaper hubs and save $150.

I like the Velocity Ailerons, a bit more than you wanted to spend, but solid. I personally run them, great training wheels and backup wheel for cross setup tubeless.
