Your Weekend/Weekly Cycling Reports - Dec 3/4

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend/Weekly Cycling Reports - Dec 3/4

Last month of the year! Time to get all that last minute cycling in for your annual goals ... and also to get in shape for Christmas. Tell us about your cycling adventures this weekend! Where did you ride? Who did you ride with?
Or did you break out the skates, skis, snowshoes, canoes, or swimming attire?

Derwent 100K Permanent ... and Ride 2 of the Petite Year Round Randonneur

Saturday -- Derwent 100K Permanent ... and Ride 2 of the Petite Year Round Randonneur

Since this was a Permanent, we had a route (which we adjusted with the blessing of the route owner), but we were allowed to choose the date and start time.

We chose today and 10 am.

Our ride had a theme ... Hurry Up and Wait!

We set off more or less downhill in the beginning at quite a brisk pace ... and came to a halt a few km down the road to wait for our turn at road construction.

Back on our way again, and down into Sandy Bay, through the traffic, up the hill, and dropping down into Salamanca. Saturdays are Salamanca Market days and we landed right in the middle of it all. So, we were off the bicycles and walking briskly through the market.
City of Hobart | Salamanca Market

Back on the bicycles again, we rounded the foreshore on the sort of, almost, bicycle path weaving between the pedestrians. (it's a bit puzzling where the pedestrians are supposed to be and where the bicycles are supposed to be) Then onto the Cycleway ... we were flying along!

I had to take a short break a few km up the Cycleway, and as we pulled in, a long line of people on bicycles, who didn't look like bicycling was their thing, moved slowly onto the Cycleway. Over the new few km we passed them all, but added to the confusion and congestion was another cycling club who had been out earlier and was on their way back. Plus the fact that the traffic we encountered at the road intersections was thick ... Christmas shopping perhaps? There were a lot of long stops at those intersections as we and these groups of cyclists tried to inch our way through the traffic ... or dash suddenly when a small break opened up. Definitely kept things interesting! You had to pay attention!

At last we had moved through the congestion and were onto a relatively open stretch of the Cycleway and then onto the road and eventually out to the highway. We kept up a really good pace to New Norfolk and about 4.5 km beyond to get our 50 km, then we turned and returned to New Norfolk to have a quite bite to eat.

On the way back, the main feature were all the motorcyclists. We knew they'd be gathering! Every year about this time the Motorcycle Riders Association holds a Toy Run, and a lot of motorcyclists get involved.
Home of the Motorcycle Riders Associations of Tasmania - Motorcycle Riders Associations of Tasmania
So many of these motorcyclists who passed us were carrying large teddy bears or had their bicycles decorated for Christmas, and a few were dressed up as Santa.

Back onto the Cycleway again, and the road traffic congestion at the intersections was even thicker ... almost standstill for the motorists which worked for us because we just slipped through it all.

As we reached the Hobart end of the Cycleway, we had a bit of a chuckle at all the motorists completely stopped. The roads were closed for the Toy Run. It was announced ... I just don't understand why you'd get in your car and drive when one of the main roads, and several smaller roads, have been closed. But we had bicycles, so we were good.

We stopped atop a small hill for a bite to eat and to discuss some strategy. We could hear the motorcyclists congregating and doing their parade, and knew there'd be a whole lot of them ... hundreds, at least. And we knew that the main road, the one we usually use, would be full of them and we'd probably not have a chance up that way.

So we decided to hug the foreshore which involved quite a bit of weaving and dodging of pedestrians, a few other cyclists, and some random traffic. And then we arrived at Salamanca. The Market was just starting to pack up ... and that's where the motorcyclists were gathering and parking.

Off the bicycles and walking again, through it all and up a steep hill, and then we were on the last leg of the journey.

I had been pushing the speed most of the way, and with about 15 km to go, my legs started turning to mush. So that last leg of the journey was a little slower. But we got there!

Very interesting ride ... no time for daydreaming, something happening all day long!

And we were both on our titaniums ... zippy, quick bicycles.

Weather
Temp: 18C (although Rowan's on-bike temperature gauge indicated 21C at one point)
Conditions: partly cloudy. The sun came out enough that we got a touch of a sunburn!
Wind: mostly ESE and kind of SE 15 km/h gusting to about 22 km/h

Stats
Distance: 100.1 km
Moving Time: 4:58:11
Elapsed Time: 5:33:33
Elevation: 953 metres
Moving Speed: 20.2 km/h

All that talk of pedestrians, crowded cycleways and traffic reminded me of the NYC Century a while back. A lot of stop-and-go can make the ride much more tiring than the time and distance suggest, but such rides can be a very interesting change of pace.

I'm into a new weekday routine now, which involves leaving for the city at six, so no more early morning rides. Instead it's a bit of swimming (more or less depending on how crowded the pool is) three days a week and working with a trainer the other two days. I'm very pleased with the trainer, as he seems to really understand what I need to do in the gym in order to be a better cyclist. I was especially happy when he pointed out what was causing some problems with my right knee, which we were able to correct.

Meanwhile, today is a rest day, but tomorrow I'll be out, and will see who I run into.

Three day weekend for me so it started Friday.

So, I did 41 miles on the Orbea Cabestany. It was a beautiful day out with clear blue skies and the valley totally blanketed in snow. Would have been even nicer if the temps had climbed higher than 25 degrees, LOL!

These are the kinds of views I'll be having for the new few months on my rides.

Saturday - Just a short 30 miles todays. Had a lot to do today so not much time for the ride. Must have been the coldest ride yet this winter as it was the first time my mustache has frozen over since last winter.

Today's ride was on the Orbea Cabestany. I love how well the old Simplex DT shifters work so smoothly shifting the current 10 speed rear cassette on this now.

Great photos again, james.

But I had to go HA! when I saw the Orbea pic. Not all your bikes are pristine... I notice a nick in the sticker there and some anodising rub.

Sat: really windy out so gf and i went to do some CX in the woods.. which worked and it wasn't too cold and i was riding pretty well. Then i made a poor line choice around a rock and accidentally stuck my front tire into a hole next to a root, couldn't bail effectively and ended up wacking my knee on a root or my frame. either way it hurt a lot and is now swollen a bit more than i'd like. Can walk and move through ROM ok but it is sore. bummed cuz we were giong to do a road ride tomorrow and that is looking rough. we'll see how it is when i wake up.

Looks like a rain out this weekend here since I don't have the proper clothing(or fenders) for riding in cold rain. Probably a good thing to have some forced rest since I hit the dirt pretty hard Thursday on a trail with a section of slick mud in a shaded curve. I will probably go for a walk if the rain is light or stops tomorrow.

Last night was the club annual dinner which includes donating some of the proceeds

from the century(etc) ride to non-profits.

I should have got ride leader of the year award for the third year running, but it was overlooked .

Did get a nice pair of knickers in the club colors, and a gift card for volunteering.

Today was a group ride with cool temps, pretty fast speed, & some hard efforts including being overtaken

by a shop ride group of ~25, & hanging with them for some miles. Overall ~60, & what passes for flattish around here.

Took a nap after which is a measure of having worked hard, but maybe it was the wine drinking.

LOL, this one is beat to crap. And a total hodgepodge of parts. French steel tubing made into a bike by a Spanish Company. Campy wheels and 10 speed cassette being shifted by an old Ultregra 9 speed RD controlled by the original Simplex friction shifters. The FD is a really old Shimano unit and the brakes are the original, and not very good, Weinmann sidepulls. But I got it for next to nothing, there's a ton of room for large tires, and it cruises at 19 mph easier than anything else I have. It's the perfect bike to use now on the winter roads since they are already using chemicals and sand. Can't do much damage to this one, LOL! And all the parts really do work well together, it shifts better than pretty much anything else I've got.

I'm not even sure what year this beast is. Orbea's home office in Spain couldn't do anything more than to send me some links to some 80s catalogs. There's no serial number and they don't have records for those days. They weren't even importing to the states back then so someone brought it over. I suspect it may be a 1986 only on speculation. Pedro Delgado won the Vuelta and some stages in other grand tours on a Cabestany back in 1985 so I can see someone wanting to get there hands on one of these the following years. The few original parts match the 1985 specs but the decals are a bit different. But I really don't know. It's a blast to ride though and with those "fat" tires at lower pressures it's a smooth ride.

Check out the rough brazing under the paint at the bottom of the lug, certainly not up to the standards of most of my other lugged bikes.

It does look ok from about 10 ft away.

Sunday -- recovery day! And a lovely day too with a high of 25C.

Cycling - 17.4 km on flattish ground riding from one beach to another.

Walking - we ended up doing about 1 km between grocery store and bakery

Canoeing - approx. 1.6 km, maybe about 30 min.

That little canoe trip was our first time in Tasmania ... first time since 15 Sep 2013, just before we moved to Tasmania.

We took our canoe down to Kingston Beach and canoed the length of the beach and back. We might have gone longer, but the wind was coming up and we didn't want to overdo it for our first time out in 3 years.

Sunday - A lazy 19.87 miles on the Cabestany before the football games. Got enough in to reach my annual goal 3 weeks early.

Sure enough, I did see quite a few friends on the road today. I knew the plan of a big group ride, and that several were planning to take a detour for a couple of hill repeats toward the end of it. Left home and took the scenic route up through the park, and made it to the base of that hill just as the gang were coming down from the highway. Rode up and down with them a couple of times. Couldn't have timed it better if I tried ☺. Cool but sunny, about 26 miles and as many hundred feet.

Heroes Ride Through Graupel
That was the theme of Sunday's group ride. We had 14 riders including 4 tandems and a bunch of singles. Temps from 34° to 45°, the low temps being during the hour of graupel. The rest of the ride was partly cloudy, just that one shower. At least we were able to get out for 40 miles and 2000' and have some fun. Beer and soup after.

Forecast tomorrow is for snow to start at 5 am all along the I-5 corridor in Pugetopolis. The commute should be really fun. When the snow gets bad here, 18-wheeler drivers just leave their rigs in the middle of the freeway.

I did 40 miles Saturday and again on Sunday. Did the same route both times to Picnic Is. and Davis Is. Cool in the morning and breezy. I was pretty happy I was able to keep a good pace into the headwind.
Strange thing on Saturday. There is one part of the route into downtown Tampa that has some lanes merging together on the right side. In between is the bike lane. Unfortunately, many drivers who are merging are looking down the road and not at the bike lane. I've learned to keep an eye out and be prepared to stop even though I have the ROW. So Saturday a driver blows through the yield sign to merge and came close to me in the lane. I did a little "did you see me wave" and a head shake. The strange part is the driver later pulled up along side of me to profusely apologized. There is hope.

Friday - My flu started to fade away after a pretty hellish week (three days spent almost entirely in bed). Took my track bike out to run some errands and bop around a little bit. Still felt really weak and the cool wind was really chilling me, so I cut it short. Went home and stayed in the rest of the night.
Saturday - Felt a little better and took the road bike out for 25 miles. Still slower than usual, but at least able to get a decent ride in without feeling like I was falling apart.
Sunday - Met up with some guys from a local club for a road ride, climbed Mt. Hollywood at Griffith Park, notched a couple PR's. We took an extended coffee break and missed a friend's cross race that we were going to cheer/heckle. I forgot to turn Strava back on after the coffee break, but I think I did around 45 miles all day.

Did about 45 mile group ride on Wednesday - first half was cloudy/dreary, about 45 degrees. The 2nd half was partly cloudy, about 45 degrees. Nice group ride. I was feeling it when I was done.
