Your Weekend/Weekly Cycling Reports - Dec 10/11

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday -- another coolish, cloudy, somewhat windy "summer" day.

Nevertheless, we decided to do a climbing ride today.

58.91 km with 928 metres (3044 ft) of climbing.

Using my special little calculation to determine the climbing difficulty of a ride, that's a 1.5 ride ...which means that, for me, it's quite difficult. I am much more comfortable with rides of a difficulty level of 1 or less. However, since we're practising our hill climbing, it was good.

However, apparently I needed to consume more electrolytes than I did ... and to hydrate a bit more. I did think at one point that I was sweating a lot, even though I was deliberately dressed relatively lightly. I should have realised! Result ... dizziness and a touch of nausea.

Sunday -- 23.7 km ... flattish ride, fairly brisk, sunny day, windy as usual.

Saturday: metric century at the Highlands Bike Fest in Sebring, Florida. I considered doing the imperial century, but my 15mph riding provided no riding partners past the 42 mile mark. That's where the 100 and 62 mile break off was. Those century people are all much faster than I. At least there were some metric people to ride with. I would have gone for the imperial century but we were then heading into the wind going back. Doing the metric was a prudent choice.

Today (Sunday): my wife started riding with her friends. They pretty much cruise at 8-10 mph, so it will be an opportunity to be with her and just move my legs a bit.

Yesterday was our first sub-freezing ride of the season. It was surprisingly pleasant; calm, sunny and quiet. We made good time up to Nyack, but since there was no hammering or hill climbing on the way, I don't think anyone had worked up a sweat, so getting underway from the coffee stop wasn't unpleasant like it would have been. I felt great until about six miles from the end. I was second wheel, in the zone, eager to take a pull, but when I asked the leader if he was going to do all the work, he said yes. A couple of minutes later and all of a sudden I felt like I was struggling. Dropped back and let everyone go. Feeling like garbage today - coming down with a cold. But I didn't want to ride today anyhow.

Bad day on my ride... Did, maybe, 19 miles. I said "maybe" because my strava ended my ride halfway for some reason.

I lost my Cateye Velo during transport - I saw it still on my bike when I loaded on bike rack and then noticed it's missing when I arrived.

The weather is great - not sunny through. I'm so tired of sunny for many days and wanted something different.

Ugh - It's been a terrible week. Between constant storms and working late I haven't gotten out. Then I tried to take out the old Raliegh for a winter storm ride and the plastic fenders literally crumbled apart. I guess the previous years road chemicals really messed them up, this would have been the first ride on this. Then I crashed on the other winter bike trying to ride the bad roads,so....

Sunday - I put the Trek 560 Pro Series on the trainer today and got in 20 miles. I hate riding inside but had to get some miles in. More storms projected all week so not sure how many days I'll get out.

Saturday was another cool and breezy 40 miles around S. Tampa. . The only noteworthy item was a Osprey that few level with me for several yards carrying a large fish. Sunday was not a great day. I went to Thonotossasa on a slightly alternate route for 43 miles. I got chased by three dogs at separate times. The first time was some Pit Bull mix. It came out of nowhere and ran right into my path. I was able to slow and when it was distracted I sprinted away. The second time was a moment later a smaller black dog was after me. I used my speed to get away. Then, when I was getting close to my turnaround point, another Pit Bull mix came out of a yard. Once again I had to put in a big effort to out distance him. My legs were beat. My road bike is also sounding and acting funny too. I'll have to investigate before I can ride it again.

Monday evening ride around Davis Is. for 33 miles. It has gotten warm and muggy again, but at least it wasn't windy. I haven't done this in a while, but I put Christmas lights on my hybrid to make it more festive.

I'm off from work this week, so I rode 30 miles yesterday. Again, my Strava decided to end my ride halfway. I'm beginning to suspect the Apple watch with long sleeve jacket may have caused that. It never happened before till I started to wear long sleeve jacket.

My next ride is either Wednesday or Thursday - depends on how pain my wisdom teeth being pulled today.

Festive indeed--well done!

It has been hot and muggy for me too, but simply because I'm stuck inside on the trainer.
