Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Reynolds r4's Or assualt slg.

I have found a returned set of r4's at a local performance for 799. They are normally 1099 and sometimes you can get 20 percent off. Should i buy them or hold out and buy a new set of new assault slgs? for what it worth this is my 1st year cycling. Currently have some cheap mavic cxp22 that don't stay to ture. I weigh around 235 and losing. I also like hills and riding hard. Can normally hold a 21 mph avg for 20 miles with about 800 feet of elevation.

Thanks in advance.

The R4's are rebranded assaults from previous years, I would say 799 is an excellent deal.

I've been riding a pair of these Reynold's for over a year & after 5,000+ miles love them. I'm 6'1" & now 175 lbs. When I bought them I was 210. BTW, the decals fall off with a hair dryer!

The R4s, IIRC, are the older narrower rims. The new Assault SLG has a wider rim and better brake track.

Whether the difference is worth the additional cost, I cannot say.

Also, if you're not in a rush, I've seen the R4s at Performance's tent sale for $500 the last couple of years.
