Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After placing an order at the LBS today, I'm now waiting on tubeless gravel tires, tubeless road tires, a cassette, 160mm deli slicer, 140mm deli slicer. LBS prices paired with mail order wait times - best of both worlds. Yay.

The car is gone, but I'm going to knock on their door and talk to them on my way to grocery shopping later today. I will see how they respond, but I very much believe it'll take a ticket or two to drive the point home.
We didn't have mail pick-up or delivery yesterday and I doubt if we will today either because of the snow even though the mail trucks have chains. (The public buses do not have chains and for some reason the bus routes are not the first streets to be plowed. This means the buses, which only run once an hour anyway, sometimes get stuck. That's why I stood in 8" of snow for 40 minutes on Thursday waiting and hoping.) Sometimes we get the mail intended for us. Sometimes our mail goes into the box next door. We are still receiving mail addressed to people who lived here over a year ago. There is no point in anyone paying for quicker delivery because even mail which is coming from another part of the state of Wyoming gets sent to Salt Lake City where it waits until they have a full truck. Then it comes up here where it gets sorted into routes. Supposedly, this was started a couple years ago in order to save money. It may, in fact, save money but it causes a great deal of unhappiness for folks I know who live on social security, still use paper checks for bills, and now have to allow an extra 3-7 days for their payment to make the side jaunt to the Beehive State.

Turrible ride today. Too long off the bike. I was sick for like 22 days straight, and still not completely out of it. Can't breathe properly, infinite conveyor of snot, etc... It's almost impossible to take it easy enough on a MTB when you're feeling like that. Also, ******** cold out there. Like 45 (it was 90 2 days ago).

Still, it's nice to get out there, I just will have a bit of a fitness hill to climb to get back from this illness.

My phone says it's 16 degrees but with the 18mph wind it feels like 0. That's kind of okay. LoP went back to work today after being home sick for three days and as long as it stays below freezing he's riding to and from Walmart on mostly snow rather than ice. I keep waiting for them to give him some kind of award for making it to work by bike every day no matter how cold or nasty it is.

When I got out on my road ride, it was still about 35 degrees with a good wind from the north. Those first 7 or so miles were so freaking cold. At least the sun was out, so whatever side faced the sun actually felt warm.

Also, speaking of too long off the bike. I really shouldn't have taken those two months off... But yeah, I remember last year when I was sick off and on and still trying to ride. That was the worst. At least now I'm healthy, but slow.

Went for a walk instead, sans balaclava. Around the Catholic high school and then through the neighborhood. At one house a couple was mowing the yard. It's February.

No Strava, so post your kudos here.

That is more to do with the nature of the people who post sarcastic replies. You all can't have it both ways -- complain about zombie threads where someone wants to say something or seek further information, or complain about new threads on repeat subjects.

I really do wonder whether the number of new people to cycling is dropping off. I know Machka has been discussing certain things with a complete newbie elsewhere, and has been very helpful. The rest of the experienced posters? Nope, nada, can't be bothered.

Arrogance applies not only to celebrating before crossing the finishing line.

Take it a little bit further. This thead is a repeat... how many times?

Honestly, how many times can we discuss the weather, a bike build, football, recipes, food, wine, cars, and illness?

No trouble in this thread. Why then, complain about others?

I wonder if they Strava their lawn mowing. Five years ago, I was in Weight Watchers. (I may go back again once I leave Wyoming since everybody puts on weight here because nearly everyone drinks because there's not much else to do in this town.) One of the ways you got to eat more calories was by burning more calories and you got to count calories you burned even doing things like mowing the lawn or carrying laundry up or down stairs. If those folks have a big enough yard, they could do some serious damage at a buffet tonight.

I will fess up to being a contributor to zombie threads. If I run across some information on an old thread, I will post a "thank you" to the person who shared it. I also upvote comments or comment on a variety of websites even if the article is several years old and it's fun when I get a response from the previous commenter or poster. Come to think of it, several of my favorite sites have been shut down either temporarily or permanently so I guess that makes all their threads zombie threads.

I thought that it was going to be 32° and sunny for the ride. Turned out to be 32° and cloudy, which is much worser. I would have brought my baklava if I would have known.

It is a bikeforum. Shocking, talking about food, nutrition, bike fit, bike setup, bikes, after ride drinks, health, illness. Oh no, cover our ears, we're discussing cycling on bikeforums.net.

I would say that the reason people don't complain about it in this thread is because this thread is a community within a community. It's one of the reasons I moved here from the 50 Plus and stayed. People have been coming here for years to see what this person is building now or how that person is holding up during flu season. There's an understanding that the sagas are ongoing. Perhaps this also occurs in the "Should I buy a Brooks saddle" threads but I haven't seen it. Someone asks the question, answers are proposed, and they go off to make or not make the purchase. Most of the time, readers don't even find out if the OP did, in fact, wash their shorts/buy a Brooks/shower in their helmet liner. The lack of closure is distinctly disappointing.

It is amazing how the information contained in a zombie thread can be quite useful, as I found out the other day. I can guarantee that if the post day or the OP wasn't on a lot of these threads, there would not be the same angst against zombie threads... and quite a few people do offer their comments and/or advice without looking at the OP date. Fresh conversation is fresh conversation.

The real trouble is that people forget where they have come from. We were all newbies once, even in using forums and dysfunctional search functions.
