I'm a little late, here, but, there was some talk over the weekend about the track racing in California.
We had a junior racer back in the 80s who worked his butt off and rose through the ranks. He got married and moved to California and continued racing as a Cat2, no mean feat in SoCal.
Anyway, he became a cycling coach and is now head coach for the junior national track team and assistant coach for the national team. He's also one of the Paralympic coaches.
I'm really proud of the kid. Here's a couple pics from last weekend:

Me too. Too many light weeks on the bike combined with too much indulging in various things. Up six pounds. Yikes.
Delicious low calorie big flavor thing: pickled red onions. Cut a red onion in half, pole to pole. Then slice thinly into half moons and put then in a heat resistant bowl with a few peppercorns. Then boil around a cup of white vinegar with 1/4 cup granulated sugar and, oh about 2T salt. Once everything is dissolved, pour over the onions. Put a plate on top of the onions and push it down to submerge the onions. Wait 20 min or so, then enjoy. You're welcome.
These will keep in a jar in the fridge for a few weeks. Makes all kind of things better.

But I'm not talking about publications although they are certainly affected by the trends. I am talking about everyday conversation, menus, signs, etc. and how all that affects the evolution of the language.
Have you not noticed that the traditional grammatical forms for the subjunctive mood have been essentially obliterated from the English language. Usages like "If I was going home now" have replaced the standard ones like "If I were going home now" nearly everywhere, on TV, in movies, novels, newspapers, etc. That isn't right or wrong, it just is. And I am interested in it just like I am interested in the loss of the past participle which is starting to increasingly occur.
That's all, just something that I find interesting. No criticism, no complaint, no finger pointing. Just something I notice.

He said you handed in your cards and had to wait till the next day for the results . . . and God help you if you made a syntax error.

To honor and not obscure the April Fools holiday, like what usually happens.

So... One of my peeves with cycling industry,
Every time they claim they have created something better (it's not), need new tool. So now I have a press tool, fine.
The BB I have is both screw on and press it. So it's press it... but the cups on each side screw together to keep it level, no creaking etc. The 16 tooth width they used for my Shimano BBright BB? Yeah figures, MegaExo, my BB tool doesn't work since it's Shimano since I assumed a Shimano BB would work with it. I'm so dumb, why would I think Shimano tool is right for BB made for Shimano? Anyway, had to order another BB tool. At least this one is better than what I got now.

FYI, want Wheels Mfg products? Buy it on Amazon, free shipping! So far bought 2 of their products, the free shipping has been 3 days, not bad.

Since the circus has been around for so long, I suspect they own the rolling stock. The reporting marks ("RBBX") on the side of the cars further suggest that.
I suspect the living conditions inside are not luxurious, but they may have some value. There are people and groups who collect and restore passenger cars, but they are usually more historic ones. I wouldn't be surprised if one doesn't end up in a museum. Another possibility is that some may be sold to other travelling shows.
Many years ago I went on a private, day excursion sponsored by a law firm we gave business two. One of the cars was a restored Pullman observation car originally built in 1923. This shot is from the one end of the car:

Speaking of the changing language. Growing up I always heard that "the suspect pled guilty" and now I always hear that "the suspect pleaded guilty". Hell, pled even shows as misspelled in my chrome spellchecker. This bugs me every time I hear it.

Fancy! I found a batch of PR films on Youtube from some late 40s/early 50s era railroads, when they had white glove dining service and fancy lounge cars for impecably dressed businessmen and their well-behaved wives and children. They're surprisingly entertaining to watch and usually fall asleep to.
Funny story from the trip: We left from Hoboken, NJ and went up to Port Jervis, NY for lunch at a restaurant. For some reason, New Jersey Transit listed the private excursion on the board at Hoboken. There was a regular, public train leaving for Port Jervis maybe 30 min. after us. Some woman boards and plops herself down in the best seat in that lounge car. After we departed, a bunch of old railroad guys were sitting around talking railroad stuff. The woman pipes up and asks what type of train we were on. We told her it was a private excursion. Turns out she had planned to take the public train but saw the earlier one and decided to get on, never really thinking twice about the fact that the train was made up entirely of historic cars. Luckily for her, she was also on her way to Port Jervis.
