Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sirrus fork upgrade & caliper brake

I have a 2003 sirrus base model I bought used (cheap) and plan to ride with roadie & touring friends on weekend rides. I traded out the suspension seatpost for a lightweight rigid aluminum one, traded the milano cushy seat for a BG road seat, and am thinking of going with a carbon replacement fork for the cro-mo stock fork, both to reduce weight and smooth out the ride. Because the sirrus has V brakes, getting a hybrid or cross carbon fork set up for V brakes seems like a waste, as the weight of these is pretty high for lower end carbon. Any problem with using a proper sized (700c) road carbon fork with a caliper front brake on a sirrus? Might look funny with caliper on front and V on back but my concern is cutting weight. I'm not sure a caliper will work on the back (no hole drilled) but could do that as well if it's possible. I have a set of 105 calipers to work with off an old road bike. Sounds like a lot of work but could be fun. Any advice appreciated.

They use standard 700c wheels, so as long as you get a normal road fork that has a road caliper drilling, you should be able to use a standard road caliper. The only reason it uses the V-brake on the front is because of the fork (and to match the V on the rear).

I have a Sirrus Pro (2004) that has the aluminum fork instead of the cf fork. Have you found any that have a disc brake boss? I'm getting nowhere with the LBS trying to get them to deal with Specialized directly for a fork transplant from an '05 and I've not been able to find any aftermarket forks with a disc brake boss.

aftermarket carbon fork with disc brake boss. It's a cyclocross fork, so it's not going to be superlight (480g) but it's not too bad and the price is pretty nice.
