Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm passing today. Its been in the 60s for the last two months on the weekends here and it decides to snow today when I actually have some time to get out. Guess I'm not dedicated enough.

Sounds familiar. During the week things were fine, but now the weekends roll around and it's sub-freezing. Last weekend managed to get in a few miles Sunday afternoon when it got out of the 20s. We may not be so lucky this weekend. During the week I got a total of nine miles of Citibiking in, so there's that...
Totally bummed about daylight savings time starting already. Since it was starting to get light, I was looking forward to getting in some weekday morning rides, but they'll have to be in the DARK now

I totally forgot about that impact! Ugh!

At least the next week is going to be an issue for me anyway. The weather forecast is very snowy and icy.

I decided to take the next step and sign up for a bike club. Now that I'm registered and looking forward to some group rides the weather is awful. Nature can be so cruel! 😭

Fri: TGIF Zwift ride. If you haven't tried this one it's super fun.. pretty calm at 2w/kg and stays compact. They play a game every 10 min to get points you have to be on the same "page" as the leader. The hour went by super fast, especially chatting with everyone on Discord. Then after the official ride is over there is a post-ride full gas bonus. last week we sprinted the new volcano hill.. this week we went up Libby hill on the Richmond course.

Sat: watched GF swim 1650yd at her swim meet. Then we went to Mike's pastry's in Cambridge (their Harvard Square store).. best Cannoli's in Boston.

should be doing a zwift ride tomorrow too.. just have to find a ride or race to do.

Attempting to get ready for 1st DC for the year, but it's in a week & only got in 3 hrs on the bike in the previous two weeks.

So had a nice ride of 137 miles, but will have to punt & start with a later one. Also having minor medical procedure this week, which could have an impact.

Had to stay off the bike for a week due to prostate cancer blood work Friday AM. Friday night at 8:30PM I headed out for 2 separate shake down laps of 1+ miles each then at 9:01PM hit the road for my "Almost Full Moon Zombie Ride." I was joined by a friend who was set to keep me company but he bailed out at the 1 hour mark. Not a problem since I had my tunes to turn on and keep me company. The roads were lit up great until a huge cloud bank rolled in at 10:15PM and it did not clear up until 3:00AM.

Trying to just maintain a nice 16mph average became a little more difficult at 12:30AM when for no apparent reason, other than to tick me off, the wind picked up. A short time after I had to take a quick comfort break and that made riding a little more relaxing. As I approached the 100 mile distance I found myself in a cycling buddy's neighborhood so I worked the route to pass by his house at 3:01AM when I hit the 100 miles and rang the bell as I passed. NO RESPONSE !!! Then headed to my friend who started the ride with me a rang the bell as I passed his house at mile 104. NO RESPONSE

My goal was to improve on the 140 miles I rode the previous Saturday, so knowing that I had between 40 and 50 miles of riding with the 8:00AM LBS ride coming up I decided to end my night ride at 4:25AM with 120 miles having only one feet to the ground stop. Got home, showered, fresh kit, had some eats, watched TV while on the computer and headed back out at 7:45AM to the LBS. Feeling good but tired I hung on at the back until mile 2.5 when they made the right turn on to a major road then promptly upped the pace to 28+mph. Thought to myself, "SEE YOU LATER ALLIGATOR' and hooked on with 3 other riders who were fine just cruising at 20 to 22 mph. Back to the shop with 33 miles in and decided that home and rest would be nice so headed out for a slow and relaxing 12 mile ride back home.

165 miles on my 1983 Paramount with down tube shifters, 6" rise steel handlebars, medium/wide saddle, 700x25mm tires.

Come Tuesday it's back on the Giant for short 60 to 70 milers and higher speeds. Cross Florida 168 Miler on April 2nd. https://spacecoastfreewheelers.com/events/xfl/

I woke up early on Saturday and did my first ever "group ride" with the local bike club, with rotating paceline. Pretty fun, though I think I'll ride with the next level up group's next week. I still had some energy in my legs after the group ride so I did some repeats and ended up climbing 5,000 ft over 65 miles.

This morning was a brisk 50 miles in the fog, dialed down to an easy zone 2 pace. I hit 1,000 miles for the year! I think the quickest I've ever hit it of all time.

We had an excellent birthday weekend. Here in Australia, there's a long weekend on about my birthday.

So we headed up north on Friday after work, and spent Saturday cycling 100 km with our Bike Fridays and discovered that mine, in particular, needs several adjustments to make it comfortable. That was one of my more uncomfortable 100 kms. Then we went to a theatre performance of Wicked which was really good. Well worth it!

On Sunday, we did a 76 km ride on our touring bicycles that was hillier than expected, then went out to dinner to one of my favourite restaurants to replenish our energy. Then we dashed off to the Speedway where we were treated to a great deal of excitement. Especially within the first few minutes of being there, as a car hurtled in our direction!

And today we capped it off with an egg breakfast that just hit the spot, a 41.7 km ride, and a little bit later, delicious pancakes with berries and ice cream and cream.

Good news, bad news. Bad news was I went to the doctor on Thursday and I have the flu. The good news? Doctor said I was the healthiest sick person she'd seen. I guess all those miles help fight off the worst of the flu because honestly if it hadn't have been for a slight fever on Thursday morning I wouldn't have gone to the doctor because I didn't feel bad at all. Heck I probably would have gone riding on Friday even I was feeling that good. Oh well, took it easy, no riding, hopefully tomorrow I can get back to an easy spin but then it supposed to get cold here, something like the mid 50's. Oh well. Ride safe everyone!

Tues: SNOW day Did a flat 4 lap race on Zwift. I've done a few of these races and this time i decided to warm up well and hammer out of the gate with the front group as best I could. I mostly achieved that doing like 150% ftp for quite a bit until things settled down and I found a group I could hang with. Also leveled up so I have the 808's now which will save me bit of time.

AND I snowblowed the driveway and shoveled the front walkway a few times. GF snowblowed once and shoveled some too. now she's doing her zwift ride.
