Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Giant Defy 1 rear rack

I have a 2011 Defy 1. A friend invited me for a multi day ride that would involve camping. I have a bontrager rear rack from another bike, but it looks like the rear brake set up on the Giant ( center pivot sidepull) will not allow me to get to the mounts.

I found this online and wondered if it would be the fix?

My seatpost is 30.9 according to specs, the clamp here is 31.8. also, of other concern - my seatpost is carbon fiber. I am considering if bending some metal plating to fit the brazed on mounts would be better.

If this is on here already I apologize for not finding it.

I appreciate any input.

R Perkins

There is a lot I don't know ... but I know i would Never attach a rack to a CF seat post. People are advised not even to clamp the seat tube in a repair rack.

Get some sheet metal and bend up some adapters and use the braze-ons. Or, use different brakes (I had to use Tektro rears to fit around the rack on my Dawes, with Tiagra up front---the Tiagra interfered with the rack.)

I agree. I will stop by my LBS tomorrow and buy a piece to bend to fit. It was one of those, while I was typing it I thought CF - clamp - bad idea.

I have a Defy and when I purchased it I wanted to know i could, if I needed to, mount a rear rack. There is another seat post clamp on the market that has the holes for mounting the rack similar to the QR Giant model you linked, but it has clamp screws like your original seatpost clamp. I'm sure you can find it with a search of the net. The traditional style will allow you to set the seatpost clamp with a torque wrench like you should do for a carbon seatpost. The other option, probably better in my opinion, is to switch to an aluminum post and the QR clamp. I say this because I have become frustrated with the carbon post and its tendency to start creaking after a couple hundred miles requiring me to pull the post, reapply carbon friction paste, and re-torque it.
